Editorial Reviews

(2-CD set) Mainstream Records' notable dalliance with psychedelic rock and pop is celebrated in exhaustive fashion with Big Beat's 2CD set All Kinds Of Highs: A Mainstream Pop-Psych Compendium 1966-1970. Though best-known as a jazz and soundtrack label, in the late 1960s head honcho Bob Shad dove into the rock market with a vengeance, conducting a remarkable and seemingly never-ending A&R odyssey across America in search of talent.

Only a couple of the several dozen acts Shad signed at the time, such as the Amboy Dukes, would ever see chart success, but Mainstream's efforts by the likes of the Tiffany Shade, Jelly Bean Bandits, Orient Express and Tangerine Zoo are now coveted collector artefacts. All Kinds of Highs selects the best cuts from the cream of the psychedelic pop albums in the catalogue, and adds appropriate singles-only tracks from Mainstream and associated label Brent.

Complete with extensive notes detailing its contents, All Kinds Of Highs is a rich potpourri of psychedelic pop, garage rock and heavy duty freakiness from this fascinating imprint. Compilation and note by Alec Palao.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mainstream's Magic July 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD
A great listening CD of the music and magic of groups signed to the Mainstream Record label. The noted standouts, groups like the favorite Amboy Dukes, The Jelly Bean Bandits and The Tangereen Zoo, are well represented with their monster garage hits that have been woven thru collectors fabrics for decades, however, the rest of the Manistream stable hold their own quite favorably on this 2-disc collection. Most of the bands presented have long since faded into musical abyss, but the music they made has always found its way into popular compliations and this collection has them all. If your a serious collector, or just a fan of the 1960's - 70's Mainstream magic, this is for you!!

5.0 out of 5 stars TREASURE TROVE OF 60's POP-PSYCH! November 13, 2013

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This excellent compilation contains 2 cd's. The first cd contains 26 tracks with a duration of 77 minutes, while the 2nd cd contains 26 tracks with a duration of almost 70 minutes. Along with the cd's, you also receive a very well annotated 28 page booklet written by Mr. Alec Palao, which contains many rare photos & pictures of both the recording artists, as well as pics of the 45's and L.P.'s in this very fine collection. When one remembers the Mainstream record label, you can usually recall that just The Amboy Dukes and Big Brother and The Holding Company led by famed vocalist Janis Joplin, recorded on that label. In fact, Big Brother only recorded their first L.P. on the Mainstream label before they moved to Columbia Records. Well, this collection reveals a large amount of other very fine groups who recorded for the Mainstream Label. This collection contains the strongest album tracks, some very good singles-only cuts, and some rare mono mixes and unreleased material, which together form a rich potpourri of Psychedelic Pop, Garage-Rock and overall some heavy-duty freakiness. Some of the other groups who stand-out in this collection are Fever Tree, The Jelly Bean Bandits, The Tangerine Zoo, The Tiffany Shade, The Stone Circus, The Bohemian Vendetta, The Orphans, The Art Of Lovin', The Sixpentz. Freeport, and Maxx. All 52 tracks in this collection are at least good with the majority being very good to excellent! If you were to try to track down the songs in this collection, you would be very fortunate to find them. If you Were able to, you would be dishing out at least several Thousand Dollars! Read more ›

I wanted to pipe in here, though the other reviewers and item description nail this offering pretty well. I just want to say that the songs are very tight (executed with precision) and excellently produced! Bob Shad, a scout for the Mainstream label, had a great ear for talent! Perhaps these performers were too good and ahead of their time. The item description describes the music here as "a rich potpourri of psychedelic pop, garage rock and heavy duty freakiness." An apt description for sure, but everything here is very listenable with groovy rhythms and melodies! Lastly, in an era when buying CDs can be a real gamble in terms of audio quality, you'll be a winner as it is obvious these recordings are sourced from nicely preserved master tapes, and extreme care was taken in digitizing them. Excessive audio compression was not noticed by my ears, and I'm usually the first to complain about overly loud CDs. There are monaural and stereophonic recordings here, and they all sound terrific! This is a super collection for anyone into psych pop from perhaps the best, and certainly the grooviest era in recording history! Turn it up and enjoy your trip! :)
