Editorial Reviews

McAlister Kemp is the bringing together of two talented artists in their own right - Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp. Both are born and bred country boys. Drew was born in Narrabri and raised in Moree and Troy born and raised in Kempsey. The album's title All Kind's Of Tough in many ways sums up what McAlister Kemp are all about. Their songs touch on the core issues faced on a daily basis by everyday Australian's, however they also do have a larrikin side!

Prime Cuts: Baby Let's Dance, It Don't Buy You Love, I'm Sure of That

Kodak moments abound with McAlister Kemp's debut CD. Unlike many recent country outings, McAlister Kemp has not yielded to the temptation of rabid ranting about non-descript and recycled themes of love and relationships. Rather, the 13 cuts on this disc deftly paint piquant vignettes of life that are so real that they do bring either nods of agreement or tears of identification. Further, occasion humour has also been thrown in to make the listening experience even more enjoyable. Sonically, this Australia duo Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp, share the same template of country rock as that of Chris Young, Brooks and Dunn and Tim McGraw. Thanks to producer Matt Fell (who has also helmed albums by Sara Storer and Karl Broadie), the backings are up on par with their American counterparts: crisp, well-executed and in your face engaging.

There is hardly a soporific moment on the disc: McAlister Kemp has a way of covering an array of topics without sounding cliché. Most moving is when the boys get a stab at romance. A gorgeous romantic mid-tempo "Baby, Let's Dance" is a song designed for couples to dance to on their wedding night. "It Don't Buy Love," on the other hand, is a heart tugging story song. Written by Drew McAlister and Michael Carr, "It Don't Buy Love" tells of a conversation that happened between two men in a bar about how the pursuit of money had ruined relationships. This ballad ought to be the soundtrack for every workaholic. "Billy" is hard-edged bluesy country narrative that plays out like an unfolding of a movie that is as gripping as Reba McEntire's classic "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.
