STAYING ON THE SAFE SIDE - PART II to the 1984 album...,
By
This review is from: All for Love (Audio CD)
This being New Edition's third complete album, 'All For Love' was the last of their successful bubblegum records. 1986 was around the corner and the sound of music was changing and rap was becoming more popular in mainstream media - which meant fans wanted a more mature sound. In some respects, they got that from "All for Love" and once again, New Edition managed to keep going. The best way to describe this album is that it is a sequel to the previous one, with little change in formula. The album opens up with "Count Me Out" which employs the same sonic elements as "Cool It Now", but the song is still able to satisfy. "A Little Bit Of Love (Is All It Takes)" is the album's standout track, and sounds different than any of their previous material. The album mellows out on "Sweet Thing", another personal favorite of mine. New Edition manages to drop another classic on us in the form of "With You All The Way", which is a distant cousin of "Lost In Love" sonically. After one listen, you cannot deny its power however and quickly realize that this song is a gem."Friends" is a mellow song featuring Ricky Bell, Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown, and is the last song in the first five song line-up that is consistently good. This song is innocent yet seductive at the same time, and illustrates the growing up that New Edition must have been going through during this time. "Kickback" is O.K. Then on "Tonight's the Night", Ralph is able to convey a deep adolescent yearning for intimacy with his loved one. "Whispers In Bed" is the most risque of the ballads on this album, but somehow maintains the same innocence that we have come to expect from New Edition in the early to mid 80s. "Who Can You Trust" is another solo Bobby joint which is nice and catchy - too bad he was not around to push it as a single, it may have had a chance since it sounded somewhat different. The N.E. posse gets together on "School", a rap about the importance of staying in school. The message is good but the format is extremely cheesy. You have to give them props for the effort though. The title track (and last one) is utterly disappointing. To sum things up, the album starts off strong and goes downhill after "Friends". But it is still a good one to have for any NE fan in that it still has relevance in three hit singles and some noteworthy album tracks.

This too is another classic by one of the very few groups who knew how to put on a show. Classic! No other group (I do notknow-maybe Boyz 2 Men came the closest) was like them. Even today the kids who are now knowing what a GREAT influence they are to boy bubble and boy soul groups of today. MAN WE MISS YOU NE. A.L.O.N.E. means a lover of new edition a group name me and friends of mine made up during those days and times.

New Edition were fulfilling their contract with MCA records when they released this album in 1985. Preceding this album were 1983's CANDY GIRL and the self-titled album released the following year. Boston's "Jackson 5" scored with COUNT ME OUT which never made it above #15 on the pop/rock/R&B charts. Also, this album marked the end of Bobby Brown's tenure with the group. Following this album in 1986 was UNDER THE BLUE MOON and Johnny Gill replaced Brown when Brown pursued a solo career. The other songs are great.

My father owns the lp version of this. This NE lp made it official that they graduated from the bubble gum pop that they had on their first 2 decent lps. It was not as good as the first two, but it was decent. Count Me Out, was my favorite. Although not a pop hit, it was a great mature funk hit that was made into a humorous video (only video from the lp and absence of Bobby Brown). "A Little Bit Of Love" is another favorite of mine (featuring Bobby on ad-libs in the end). "Let's Be Friends, With You All The Way, Sweet Thing, and Kickback" are the other hot tracks on there and thats a wrap. Although this lp was different from the first 2, the other 5 tracks not mentioned was considered a dissappointment to me so I saw no point in purcahsing the cd form. 3 stars is not a bad shot though.

Okay I love New Edition (old and new) but this is just a very awkward stage.First off every song here is definately adult pop/soul but these boy's voices are at this weird 'tween' stage-they all sound high and nasal (almost as if Fran Drescher was singing them). And these songs DO NOT need nasl voices. For the well acclimated New Edition fan this will please them, but for the newcomer the earlier and later albums are alot better.

The fourth best New Edition cd.,
By Derrick Dunn "The Realest DJ" (Woodbridge,VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All for Love (Audio CD)
In my opinion this is the fourth best New Edition cd. The order of their cd's is (on greatness) 1. HeartBreak 2. Home Again 3. New Edition 4. All For Love 5. Christmas All Over The World 6. Candy Girl and 7. Under The Blue Moon. I like all he songs on the cd in particular Let's Be Frieds and Whispers In Bed. My man Ralph T somes his seduction powers very well in the song. It's like Knyte said to bad Bobby left. But I think in retrospect it was for a good thing because Johnny came and helped them mature very well. If you doubt the power of boy bands listen to any NE album and you'll see a true boy band.

A Good Quality Third Album From New Edition,
By
This review is from: All for Love (Audio CD)
During this time New Edition were beginning to look somewhat beyond their Jackson 5 sounding period of their previous two albums and began to take on some slightly different ideas into their framework, some of which would serve them very well in the years to come. By this point the members of the bands voices were beginning to change. For one Maurice Starr has ceased involvement with the group at this point with Michael Sembello and the members of the band who would later become Bell Biv DeVoe took on more of the production duties on this album. Also Ralph Tresvant, the pre teen MJ soundalike singer of the band's voice had begun to lower by this time so the strong kiddie soul element was even further disappearing from this music. Some uptempo tunes here such as "Count Me Out","Let's Be Friends" and the title song still sound upbeat and jubilant to a degree but the overall approch is more that of teenagers as opposed to children-same goes for the lyrics. As with the Jacksons in the mid 70's New Edition were about to potentially enter an awkward phase for child stars:simply growing up. But apparently MCA really believed in this group and decided to allow them to make the transition into puberty as smooth as possible. Many songs from this album have a more midtempo urban funk groove such as on "A Little Bit Of Love","Sweet Thing","With You All THe Way","Whispers In Bed","Tonight's Your Night" and "Who Do You Trust" all showcase young men who were just likely making it beyond first base sexually by this point and there's a certain excitment in the delivery considering. At this point also hip-hop elements were becomming more crucial even in R&B so songs such as "Kickback" and "School",even if they would'nt be considered so do predate the new jack sing sound that this band, together and apart would use as a full fledged entry point into adulthood towards the end of the 80's decade. The later song is actually almost fully rapped as the band members trade off tales of minor delinquincy and how they elected to concentrate on education. It manages to bring out the positive and educational element of the "hood" that most people either don't or choose not to see. This is very much an important transitional album for the band. There would be at least one more experimental venture before they further explored that hip-hop element to it's more logical conclusion but all the same if your a fan of New Edition or 80's pop/funk in general this album likely just for you.
