5.0 out of 5 stars Good clean fun...., March 17, 2004
This review is from: All the Marbles (Paperback)
From a take-off of everyone's least favorite party-driven pyramid marketing scheme (Galway) to a description of the plots of soap operas, Dusty Rainbolt's 'space opera' is a laugh a page. If she chewed anything at all while she was writing this tongue in cheek epic, I'm sure Dusty would have done some damage. Well done! I can't wait for the sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Purr-Fectly Entertaining Ride, August 8, 2003

Rainbolt has a solid first effort in this novels. She pulls no punches either with her fiction or her humor.

All the Marbles is a romp through the universe with the poor heroine who doeesn't know she's the heroine. Chandra is put through her paces by man and cat as she is swept along events not of her own making.

You find yourself wondering along with her what's going on and even feeling her pain, even as you laugh at the situations she finds herself in.

Rainbolt has set up a rolicking trip and you can only wonder what she'll come up with next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wildly Entertaining, January 13, 2010
This review is from: All the Marbles (Paperback)
If, like me, you miss Douglas Adams's brand of space opera humor, then you will enjoy All the Marbles.

At the opening of the book, Chandra thinks she is about as low as a human can get. She is a stranded lineman for an inter-glactic ma bell. Her partner has lost everything she owns in a card game just moments before losing his life.

But Chandra soon learns that things can get so much worse as she is chased across the galaxy by hit men, buccaneers who steal party supplies, media moguls and her own employers, all searching for something that she's never heard of, but that her former partner may have won in the card game.

Chandra's only salvation may lie in some old television broadcasts from Earth, a cat with a bad attitude and an archetiect who can't keep his space ship clean.

All the Marbles is both hilarious and inventive.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SciFi must read, August 19, 2007

What a fun, fast paced reading experience. I am a big SciFi fan, so I am very picky about the whole genre. This book I could not put down. I was chuckling, smiling and/or laughing the whole read through. I plan on reading it over at least several times to absorb all the little details. If you have read and liked "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" you will love this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The entire universe seems to want Chandra's inheritance . . ., February 23, 2006

. . . and that inheritance is a couple of seemingly worthless polished stones left behind by her ex-partner, who managed to get killed while staking their ship and supplies in a card game. Her boss Intergalactic Ma Bell isn't expecting her to call in for months so she's stranded on the armpit of the galaxy. She's being stalked by uniformed bounty hunters clanking from their war metals, an out-of-favor journalist looking for a story, and a nerd with a homicidal cat. She's got aliens who worship 50s TV stars, aliens who think the only proper governmental system is a pyramid scheme, and aliens who hijack party supplies.

And that's just the beginning. Rainbolt learned about humor at the knee of Douglas Adams, and about terse prose from Zelazny. Her own keen eye for the ridiculous takes us on a wild ride far from what ails you. You won't believe where this tale is headed, but you'll be glad you went along for the ride.

There was a sentence on the first page that was worth the price of admission, but I won't spoil it for you. Why don't you pull up a chair, prop your feet up and find out if you, too, have a chance at All The Marbles?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, September 20, 2003
This review is from: All the Marbles (Paperback)
All the Marbles is a quirky book which gives you a wild ride through the Galaxy with Chani Solomon. Left stranded by her partner, Tyrus, who bet their ship and van in a card game and got himself killed, she's being pursued by various aliens who want a couple of seemingly worthless stones. Somewhere along the way she join Wright and his cat, Ivan The Terrible. Really funny with good twists and turns. You'll meet all sorts of wacky aliens, including a group who worships Lucy and Ricky. Too funny! You'll enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ Sci-comedy, August 28, 2003
This review is from: All the Marbles (Paperback)
Channie represents the real modern woman. She is smart, strong, and funny, but genuinely quirky. Her "mad cap" adventures take her from the land of Bitter to a place resembling Fantasy Island. A few good times, lots of bad times, a hint of romance, and one very dirty litter box.

Its a non-stop galactic rollercoaster !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wortthy Blend of Douglas Adams with the truth of cats!, August 4, 2003
This review is from: All the Marbles (Paperback)
From the opening in a dingy bar, to showing how earth's TV transmissions can affect alien society. This rollercoaster ride of fun and thoughtful speculative fiction brings about a new must read voice. Dusty Rainbolt must have read all the "Hitchhikers Guide" novels and decided to take only the good lessons taught by Douglas Adams. Our protaganist works for the succesor to "MA" bell in space and her life is going ok until her partner and co-worker up and dies. Now she is left broke, depressed, and the uneasy owner to a very unique cat. With twist and turns in every chapter, you are kept laughing and groaning on every page. Laughing at the absurdity of the world, while groaning at the situations in which she finds herself. % stars I give it and you might find yourself wishing for a way to give it six!
