Editorial Reviews

Review

"The winning duo Lester and Munsinger have done it again. The snappy text is laugh-aloud funny and incorporates a message that the intended audience often needs to hear."--Booklist, starred review

"Team Lester/Munsinger are a success because they are simple, direct and elementally charming."--Kirkus

"Lester's prose is dashed with humor throughout, as is Munsinger's characteristically emotive artwork."--Publishers Weekly "The message is forthright, but the delivery, as always, is subtle and nuanced, and loads of fun."--School Library Journal

"This playful approach to important lessons in sharing and listening is a sure winner for classrooms and families alike."--Bulletin

Great reading. Nice way to intergrate humor on such a serious matter. The children thought it was very funny and still got the message on how to share with their peers.

Funny story as are all Helen Lester's book. Great to read aloud and children will enjoy it. It has a lesson so opens up a discussion about sharing

Greedy Gruntly pig wants to hog everything for himself. (Get it?? Hog? For himself! Get it???) During a treasure hunt with friends, his attempts to outwit them and beat everybody to the treasure all backfire. He thinks he's left with nothing... until his generous friends show him that they saved a bag of treats just for him. Munsinger's watercolor illustrations seem a little reminiscent of David McPhail. This story was just a wee bit didactic for my tastes. Still, you could do worse for a picture book about the value of friendship and sharing.

Gruntly is a HOG in more ways than one! He hogs everything and his friends have had enough of this behavior. He and his friends are taking part in a treasure hunt. Gruntly has a plan to win all of the treasure for himself. Greed gets in the way and his plan back fires. He is left with no treasure at all. Luck for him he has some amazing friends that know how to share and he is taught a valuable lesson. A great read to discuss for character education.
