Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

It's time to give a gift, and a bunch of CDs is the obvious answer. S/he adores that certain style of music about which you know nada. All you fathom is that your friend loves to listen to that hogwash, and you want to make that dear person happy. So what do you buy? You know well enough that not every album was created equally, that even if it all sounds the same to you, to a connoisseur some CDs capture the definitive essence of the artistry, while others just aren't worth the Mylar they're made from. For this purpose alone, the Experts' Guide to the Best CDs, Albums & Tapes is one of the best, most useful resources ever compiled. Is Waylon Jennings your buddy's fave? A quick check reveals that "Honky Tonk Heroes" was one of his greatest works ever. Is you brother into Scottish music? Learn that Clishmaclaver's Roots Entwined is not to be missed. Arsenio Rodriquez's Cuban Counterpoint is brilliant for Afro-Cuban enthusiasts, Yma Sumac's Exotic Sampler contains some of her finest work, Queen Latifah's Black Reign is sure to please your rap-loving nephew, Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything? is an excellent example of classic rock, and for your jazz-loving dad, a gift of Keith Jarrett's Facing You can't miss. With reviews and ratings for over 20,000 albums from 4,000 artists in 20 music categories, this guide helps with the ticklish art of gift giving--to yourself, so you can finally build that music library you've always yearned for, and for those esteemed friends whose hearts are golden but whose musical tastes are not your own. --Stephanie Gold

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, But Lacking In The "World Music" Area, March 30, 1999

This review is from: All Music Guide: The Experts' Guide to the Best CD's, Albums & Tapes (All Music Guide Series) (Paperback)
It is a very comprehensive, useful and well-organized guide. But there is not nearly enough about world music artists. For that, you need to turn to "World Music: The Rough Guide" or "The Brazilian Sound."

5.0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, the best record guide in print., July 7, 1998

This review is from: All Music Guide: The Experts' Guide to the Best CD's, Albums & Tapes (All Music Guide Series) (Paperback)
Musichound, Virgin, Roughguide, Penguin... they can all take a hike. For my money, the All Music Guide series provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the music available to the masses. I may not agree with all the commentary -- and somebody's got to explain whether there's any real difference between a dot that's filled in vs. one that's empty -- but I've found it to be an essential tool in helping me build my music collection and expand the breadth of my listening tastes. Especially helpful are the timelines describing the orgins of various music sub-genres. Personally, I never was able to figure out the difference between "house" and "industrial," and where did "ska" come from? The answers are in the All Music Guide. I've graduated from the all-encompassing tome, which covers all music categories ranging from classical to country to rap, to the All Music Guide to Rock. For anyone looking to build a collection of so-called "essentials", this book is the one to get.

4.0 out of 5 stars Big Encyclopedia, August 2, 1999

This review is from: All Music Guide: The Experts' Guide to the Best CD's, Albums & Tapes (All Music Guide Series) (Paperback)
This is a good book but the guides to jazz, rock, and blues are much better and more complete. Also, the classical section is rather skimpy.
