5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Say goodbye to cotton, July 18, 2008

This review is from: All-Natural, Eco-Friendly Bamboo Fiber Mens Dress Socks (Health and Beauty)
After wearing these socks, I don't think I can ever go back to cotton. I'm looking all over for these same socks in a casual style...

I've known, for years, how awful cotton is for your body. Not only is it covered in chemicals, but it's also not good for your feet (especially if you exercise). Cotton traps moisture and bacteria, which can lead to all sorts of problems.

But the biggest problem, for me, is that cotton does not wick. If I wear cotton socks on a long/active day, or if I use them to exercise (jog, play tennis, bike, etc), they soak up moisture & sweat. This does two things: prevents your feet from breathing, which makes them sore, and it hardens the heel and bottom of the sock, which is tough on your knee and ankle joints. Who knew that cotton socks could contribute to joint pain?

Now, it turns out that cotton is disasterous for the environment. We don't hear much about this, since the cotton industry is one of the huge corporate welfare programs, and receives so much free money for ad campaigns. But growing cotton contributes to soil erosion, it's almost impossible to grow environmentally friendly cotton, they use pesticides in growing and chemicals in manufacturing... and recently there are reports of many, many problems with Egyptian cottons ruining the environment in Egypt and Northern Africa.

So for quite some time, I have been buying soft, wicking microfiber for socks & undergarments. They are much more comfortable than cotton, higher quality, & do not stain as easily (especially sweat stains). But microfiber is not a particularly "green" way to shop (Spandex, Lycra, and Polyester are all plastic by-products of oil). And even though I'm a huge fan of recycled plastic fibers (made by companies like Patagonia or Polartek), they're often too expensive, and they tend to focus on sports gear, not casual wear.

This is the first alternative eco-friendly fabric I have found that is both super comfortable AND wicks (unlike hemp, sissal, or green cotton). It looks and feels just like my microfiber socks, and is actually less expensive.

So as funny as it sounds to get excited about a pair of socks, these have a lot of benefits for me. They're environmentally friendly, and the most comfortable dress/business casual sock I have evern worn. They are unbelievably soft, and at the end of the day, no foot odor and no moisture.

Two thumbs up.
