Book Description

October 9, 2012
With my eyes closed and Alex's core friends all around me, it was like I'd become my big sister, or something just as good. And so who cared if they were calling it Alex's party? One thing I knew: it would be remembered as mine.

Alex has it all—brains, beauty, popularity, and a dangerously hot boyfriend. Her little sister Thea wants it all, and she's stepped up her game to get it. Even if it means spinning the truth to win the attention she deserves. Even if it means uncovering a shocking secret her older sister never wanted to share. Even if it means crying wolf.

Told in the alternating voices of Alex and Thea, Adele Griffin's mesmerizing new novel is the story of a sibling rivalry on speed.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Things were not great when their parents divorced, but at least Alex and Thea had each other. Then their mother met Arthur, and now they are even losing the strong sisterly bond they once shared. Sudden, extreme wealth has changed everything, including their self-perceptions. Beautiful, socially at ease, and effortlessly popular Alex is now starving herself and has developed a stifling phobia of going out in public. Meanwhile, Thea, once a determined academic, is doggedly pursuing the social status formerly enjoyed by her older sister. She is transforming her gift for creative writing into orally spun lies about her family and classmates to win the attention of her sister's friends and boyfriend. Both girls are aware of how their lives are spinning out of control, but they are too absorbed in their own problems to help each other. With their mother and stepdad away for the weekend, Thea plans the party of the year, hoping to finally capture her place in the spotlight, but the event ultimately winds up pitting the sisters against each other. Telling the story through their alternating voices, Griffin drives her plot through the intricate development of her two main characters. While the negative side of wealth is a primary theme, it is by no means the only issue. Loss of bodily control, anorexia, social phobia, sibling rivalry, and compulsive lying are all explored as each girl's story unfolds. An excellent choice for teen girls' discussion groups.-Cary Frostick, Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Sisters Alex and Thea Parrott are damaged girls. From the outside, it seems as if their lives have taken an upturn when their mother marries a generous and uberwealthy man, who houses them in a mansion. But now their mother is gone most of the time, Alex is wasting away physically and emotionally, and Thea takes to spinning reckless, outrageous lies. The antagonism between the once-close sisters is immediately apparent to readers as alternating chapters switch between Alex, the beautiful one, and Thea, the younger but smarter one. Alex’s chapters are narrated in third person, emphasizing how distant she has become, even to herself. Thea’s intense first-person narration reveals a girl ready to explode with her desperate need for attention. Griffin also fashions distinct secondary characters who radiate with nuanced tension, such as Alex’s rakish boyfriend, Joshua, who becomes Thea’s chosen conquest. The book is so raw that at times it’s difficult to read—yet it’s impossible to put it down. Readers who are just discovering National Book Award finalist Griffin will want to read more of her books (The Julian Game, 2010; Tighter, 2011), which frequently explore frightening matters of the human psyche. Grades 10-12. --Diane Colson

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting... January 4, 2013
Format:Hardcover
I know there are mixed reviews out there on this one, and honestly I'm stuck somewhere in the middle. On a small level, this is the story of two sisters that suffer the devastating effects of becoming nouveau rich. On a much larger and deeper level, however, this is a story of sibling rivalry... and that story is dark and troubled.

Thea is the younger sister tired living in Alex's shadow. She has developed this image of what her life should be like and it eats away at her. It consumes her, really. Thea's story sucks you in from the beginning. She is so screwed up that you can't help but continue to read because you want to find out where that train wreck is heading. And what a train wreck she is! Is she crazy? Yes, but that's an understatement. Border line psychotic? Oh yeah. Pathological liar? Mmm, yep. An endangerment to herself and those around her? Right again! Like I said, complete train wreck.

While Thea's highly disturbing story unfolds, the mystery surrounding Alex's neurosis also unravels. You can tell that Alex was once this amazing person (that probably wasn't too likeable), but her unfortunate "event" has left her scared and damaged. So is so damaged, in fact, that she is allowing herself to fade away--literally. She's got a plate full of issues to handle too!

So yes, I thought the story behind these two sisters was very interesting. Compelling even. I was captivated for the most part. But the other characters did not hit the mark for me, and I think they took away from the book as a whole. For starters, Alex's boyfriend was a douche bag. Barf. I understand the purpose he played, but geez. Then there was Xander... I really liked Xander, but the whole Alex-Xander "thing" was too rushed. It happened so quickly. In one paragraph the entire orbit of this book changed and I wasn't fully buying it. Sorry. I'm happy with the ending. I think it worked, even if it left a lot of questions unanswered. I can certainly say there is no neat little bow ending to annoy you, and that is commendable.

Overall, I think what could have been a phenomenal story was rushed in places, which ultimately took away from the force of the story between the covers. It was still a good read for older YA readers, but not my favorite in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review - All You Never Wanted December 13, 2012
By Kris
Format:Hardcover
This is a dark, dark story.

Told from the alternating perspectives of Thea (in first person) and Alex (in third person), All You Never Wanted tells the story of two sisters whose lives take a drastic change for the worst. Once the queen of the school, Alex has been wasting away since the terrible incident at Haute caused her to begin starving herself. Thea resents her sister for throwing away all that she had, all that Thea wants to be, and plots to steal Alex's friends and power.

The characters are intense and complex. Alex is a really nice girl deep inside, but her intense fear of losing control prevents her from getting close to people and living life. She is the one I had the easiest time connecting with and the one I wanted to see find happiness. Xander is the sweetest guy ever under all his tattoos and someone who has the capability to draw Alex out of her shell. Her boyfriend Joshua seems to genuinely love her, but he's at a loss at how to handle Alex's insecurity and he doesn't have the ambition that she has to do something with her life (even in spite of her fears). I'm still not sure what to think of him or what Alex ever saw at him. He seems to be the victim in a lot of ways; at the same time, I don't like guys who fall on the wrong side of the law.

As for Thea, she is one messed up kid. It seems as though she used to be close to Alex, and I can easily picture her as a cute little book nerd. However, she doesn't want to be that nerd. She wants power and popularity, and she's willing to do anything to get it, even if it means spreading false, very nasty rumors about people. Even if it means seducing her sister's boyfriend, whom she's lusting after. In short, she's a manipulative bitch with a talent for coming up with stories on the spot, and she has the ambition to take down her own sister to reach her goals. I wanted to strangle her many times over the course of the novel.

This is an emotionally exhausting story. Though it's a short book, it takes time to process. Thea tells one last story at the end, and we never figure out whether or not it's true. I don't want to believe that she would make up something so horrendous. From her thoughts, I'm hoping that deep down inside Thea truly wants to bring her family together again and just doesn't know how to correctly express herself. At the same time, I don't want it to be real. However, Thea has gone overboard with everything in her quest for power. It is so very hard to trust her, and I can understand if Alex takes a long time to forgive her. If Thea takes a long time to separate herself from her lies and figure out who the real Thea is.

We aren't given any answers at the end of the book. They are for us to come up with on our own as we think about what too much wealth and ambition can do to people. What it means to be strong; what a true partner/sister/friend should be.

This is a book that I recommend reading at least once.

4.0 out of 5 stars wow-a review from Bookworm1858 November 25, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Immediately after finishing this, I logged onto goodreads to update and the only word I could think of to put in my review then was "wow." Just wow. This was a very hard review for me to write-Griffin is such a talented writer and when she turns her lens on rich girls and the sister-sister relationship, she really hits on my soft spots when it comes to reading.

This book is told in alternating perspectives, first-person from younger sister Thea and third-person from older sister Alex. The reviews I've seen have mostly gravitated toward Alex but personally I found Thea more compelling and I think that was partly because she was telling her story. The other reason is that I think I like to read about master manipulators and liars, which describes Thea. She thinks Alex has it all and she wants it for herself; that means the cool friends, the reputation, the boyfriend, everything, no matter what story she has to spin to secure them for herself.

Meanwhile Alex suffers crippling anxiety from something that happened at an internship. This is revealed to us fairly early in the book and while it was definitely embarrassing, I don't think it deserved as much importance as she placed upon it. Then she spends most of the book hanging out with Xander, a guy who is very much not her boyfriend but who magically lifts her out of her funk over the course of one day...um...awful fast, eh? So even as Thea made me cringe with her obvious grasping ways, I at least admired her determination and nerve over Alex's more sniveling ways.

Lastly we come to the end, which just made me drop my jaw. I can't believe it ended that way. It's been about a week and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand, this; on the other hand, that (Obviously I can't be too specific without going into spoilers!) The way that their sibling rivalry comes to a head and is resolved (or more precisely not resolved) just blew me away. I don't think anyone could predict this ending.

Cover: Makes me think "poor little rich girl" but I don't really think Thea or Alex when I look at it.
