Highest resolution e-reader display

New—With twice as many pixels as the previous generation, the all-new Kindle Paperwhite has an improved high-resolution 300 ppi display for crisp, laser quality text. No other e-reader offers a higher resolution display.

No glare in bright sunlight

Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper. Show me

Read comfortably with one hand

Lighter than a paperback, comfortably hold Kindle Paperwhite in one hand for those times when you can’t put the book down.

Charge monthly, not daily

Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to an outlet. A single charge can last up to six weeks (based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless turned off and the light setting at ten).

Won't tire your eyes in the dark

Kindle Paperwhite guides light toward the surface of the display with its built-in front light—unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes—so you can read comfortably for hours without eyestrain. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

Next-generation reading experience

New—The all-new Kindle Paperwhite now offers Bookerly, an exclusive font crafted from the ground up for reading on digital screens. Warm and contemporary, Bookerly is inspired by the artistry of the best fonts in modern print books, but is hand-crafted for great readability at any font size.

Coming soon—All-new typesetting engine lays out words just as the author intended for beautiful rendering of pages. With improved character spacing and the addition of hyphenation, justification, kerning, ligatures, and drop cap support, our best-in-class typography helps you read faster with less eyestrain. Show me

Enjoy reading with larger font sizes without compromising your reading experience. Page layout and margins automatically adapt to work well at even the largest font sizes. The new typography and layout improvements are available on over half a million books, including many best sellers, with thousands more being added every week.

Wi-Fi

A Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Voyage with Wi-Fi is a great choice if you already have a high-speed internet connection and wireless router set up in your home. If you do not have Wi-Fi set up at home, a 3G model may be a better option—3G connectivity lets you download books anytime, anywhere.

Wi-Fi + free 3G

A model with Wi-Fi + free 3G is the easiest option because there is no wireless setup—you are ready to shop, purchase, and read right out of the box. Built-in free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments—Amazon pays for 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. Your Kindle may use wireless connectivity to make other services available, such as wireless delivery of personal documents, which may require an additional charge. For more information, see Wireless Terms and Conditions

With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, 3G lets you download books anytime, anywhere, whether you're relaxing on a beach, halfway through a hike, or waiting on the tarmac. Check 3G coverage area

For U.S. customers traveling abroad, additional charges apply for wireless delivery of periodical subscriptions. To avoid any charges, you can always use a Wi-Fi connection or download items via your computer and transfer them to your Kindle using USB.

Some books may not be eligible for download over 3G wireless, including promotional content or where indicated on a book detail page.

If you're reading reviews of the new 3rd generation Paperwhite, you're likely considering buying one. If so, you're probably in one of these categories:
* Never owned a Kindle e-ink reader
* Own an older Kindle e-ink reader, but not a Paperwhite
* Own a first or second generation Paperwhite

I'll save my opinion on whether the new Paperwhite 3 is worth buying until the end of my review. (But I will say this: They've taken a great product and made it even better.) First, here's a comparison of the new Paperwhite with the second generation Paperwhite (comparisons are for the wi-fi models):

Second Generation Paperwhite (2013)
-------------------------------------------
Size: 6.7"x4.6"x0.36"
Weight (wi-fi version): 7.3 ounces
Display: 6" diagonal, 212 pixels per inch, 16-level grayscale, LED frontlit
Storage memory: 4GB
Page turns: Touchscreen
Number of fonts: 6
Display lighting: Manually adjustable front-lighting

All-New Paperwhite (2015)
------------------------------
Size: 6.7"x4.6"x0.36"
Weight (wi-fi version): 7.2 ounces
Display: 6" diagonal, 300 pixels per inch, 16-level grayscale, LED frontlit
Storage memory: 4GB
Page turns: Touchscreen
Number of fonts: 7
Display lighting: Manually adjustable front-lighting

Note that the physical size is identical to the older Paperwhite, so covers and sleeves that worked with the older Paperwhites are still usable (thank you, Amazon). The most obvious difference is the screen resolution: 300 pixels per inch is a major jump from the 212 pixels per inch in the older Paperwhites.

I ordered the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite so that I could give my current one to my brother. I want home to read some books over the summer and not spend the whole time playing video games. I primarily use the Papwerwhite while on the go (I often use Kindle for PC when I’m home). My favorite uses include long travel days or days accompanying the misses to the mall. You’d be surprise how many short reads I can complete while the wife is trying on shoes. :-)

This new version of the Kindle Paperwhite has some improvements over the previous version. But are these changes enough to warrant an upgrade? Is the Paperwhite still the e-reader to beat? To answer these questions, please see my pros and cons below:

' PROS:

• Build quality is solid (albeit with plastic).
• Screen is bright. Text and images are sharp.
• It has the same high-resolution e-ink display found on the more expensive Kindle Voyager.
• It has a better screen, more ram, and better performance over the previous version while costing the same amount of money.
• It has a new typesetting engine with improved kerning and justification.
• Battery life is great. It will last for weeks. This makes the Paperwhite an idea companion for long travel days or for long excursions without access to power.
• We received a unit that was already charged and connected to our Amazon account. Thus, we were able to start reading books right away.
• Interface is easy to use and has a very small learning curve. Most people will be able to pick up the Kindle Paperwhite and immediately begin using it.
• All Kindles have access to the best e-book ecosystem currently available. Finding and purchasing books is a breeze. Locating books on the device is also easy and intuitive.

We currently use a kindle touch, model do1200, the version before they had backlights available. It serves its purpose fine, but figured this may be worth the upgrade even just for the backlight.

Vs our kindle touch it feels a bit snappier/more responsive, the layout and actions are a bit different/refined, and overall it's about the same size and weight. The three main features that sparked the purchase are the backlight, the new font & resolution.

Resolution wise, it has the beefier 300ppi of the higher end kindle voyager, and it does show, everything is crisper, no blockiness. The new font is also pretty nice, it's very pleasing to read, and i imagine it will be even more dramatic a difference to those with poor vision. It just flows better/is less cramped without being too spread out.

The backlight is such an eerily cool thing... it can go brigther than necessary, and when dimmed down low it has this really neat/interesting glow. (i'm easily amused)

The texture of the screen is more paper-like than our kindle touch which is smooth,. I'm not yet sure which i prefer. On the one hand, it's nice that they're going for the mock-paper feel, but on the other hand, you never swipe on paper books, and thus swiping on the new textured screen is a bit sandpaper-y. It's something i'll probably forget about in a week, so chalk it up to preference/not a big deal either way.

Overall it seems like a no brainer for those with older kindles or those who want to upgrade to a backlight(very worth it) It seems the font and resolution are there to entice folks to choose the paperwhite over the standard kindle, and for that i think the extra $40 is well, well worth it. But if you have a recent generation kindle and are happy with it, maybe get some more mileage out of it till the next gen (hoping for color!)
