Biography

Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins) is a British pop singer born in 1951.

In the beginning, Gaynor Hopkins sang in pubs and clubs all over south Wales with her bands; first Bobby Wayne and the Dixies and then Imagination. By 1975 she had settled on the stage name Bonnie Tyler and had recorded her first single for RCA Records, "My Honeycomb". Though it failed to chart, her second release, "Lost in… Read more in Amazon's Bonnie Tyler Store

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Effort Missed in the U.S., November 18, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: All in One Voice (Audio CD)
"All in One Voice" is a wonderful record but what is the point of making a record this good if half of the world doesn't even know it's out there. Bonnie Tyler's previous album, "Free Spirit," was heavily promoted but apparently did not sell well. That album was a mixed bag; some truly great cuts and then some truly not so great cuts. On the other hand, "All in One Voice," is so fresh & exciting and there's not a dud amoung the cuts. On top of the good material, this album harbors some of Tyler's best singing to date! Beginning with "Heaven" and continuing right through "Like an Ocean" and beyond, this collection is uncommonly beautiful. My favorite cut is "You Always Saw the Blue Skies," which is playful, quirky and totally captivating. Tyler's rendition of "I Put a Spell on You," is incredibly haunting and believable while the string arrangement blew me away. Mild filler might be "The Reason Why," and "Return to Blue," but it's good filler nonetheless. One misfire - "He's the King," and "Silent Night," though the latter misses out only because it sounds like it was never finished, cutting off very quickly after the second verse. Still, this album has so many great moments and should have been heard here in the U.S. Who even knew about it? Where are Ms. Tyler's promoters, managers, and record people? They're certainly not working for her! If they were, this album would have put Bonnie Tyler back in the limelight where she belongs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure magic - a masterpiece, August 8, 2003
This review is from: All in One Voice (Audio CD)
Bonnie Tyler has recorded many outstanding albums (and one or two of lesser quality) but this obscure 1998 album may actually be the best of the lot. A new Bonnie album is a rarity these days, so much so that I wondered if there would ever be another, but in 2003 a collection of covers was released. As I write this, I have not had the pleasure of hearing that album, but if the covers included here are anything to go by, it will be sensational.

The covers here include Angel of the morning, I put a spell on you and The rose, all of which sound fresh and exciting despite the frequency with which they've been covered previously. More surprising is the inclusion of a Christmas carol. I'm never keen on Christmas songs being included on normal albums (though it is, sensibly, the final track) and nor am I am wild about hearing yet another version of the lovely but over-recorded Silent night, but I have to say that Bonnie's version is pure magic, even despite the rather sudden ending. On this evidence, I wish Bonnie would record an entire Christmas album.

Of course, this album does not just contain covers but many originals too. Perhaps the best song here is You always saw the blue skies, in which Bonnie misses the optimism of an ex-lover, or maybe a lost mother or father - the lyrics are open to interpretation. Several of these show Bonnie looking to the future, sometimes bright and optimistic, sometimes unsure or worried.

There are no hard driving rockers on this album, but while Bonnie is brilliant at those - her original version of Simply the best is at least as good as Tina Turner's famous cover of the song - the quality of the music here is so good that you don't need them.

This album was released in Germany but not in Britain or America - no surprise because Bonnie is more popular in Germany than elsewhere. Nevertheless, if you like any of Bonnie's music, you will surely love this album. It is well worth whatever effort is required to find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album Bonnie has done to date, September 1, 2001
This review is from: All in One Voice (Audio CD)
It starts with Bonnie's beautiful voice coming into its own when she sings the delierously great song Heaven and pores her heart and soul into it and it ends with her great rendition of Silentnight.Everything in between is just to hard to describe as there are not enough words in the english language to capture the beauty and brilliance of this album. Why this album was not released worldwide is beyond me a total lack of competence, like always when it comes to Bonnie Tyler(sad but true see what they did to free spirit another brilliant Bonnie Tyler album that did not get the promotion and therefore recognition it deserved due to East West),on behalf of East West records. That is the second cd they just let get down the drain and I can only feel for Bonnie who must be so dissapointed(latest news she has finally left East West.A good decision before those guys ruin her career completely!!To all you Bonnie fans out there I can only say do not be deterred by the import price!!This cd is a defenate must in your collection. Its Bonnie at her absolute best!!
