Editorial Reviews

Since his days with Blood Sweat & Tears in the mid-1970s, followed by stints with Billy Cobham and Miles Davis band in the 80s, and a solo career that now spans more than 25 years, guitarist Mike Stern has used his jazz roots as a starting point for exploring a range of alternate territories that include R&B, rock, swing, funk, world music and numerous other regions along the musical topography. The recipient of Guitar Player magazine s Certified Legend Award for 2012, he s an artist who s not afraid to bring numerous styles and ideas however diverse into the same place just to see what happens.

All Over the Place is Stern s new recording on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. Set for release on June 19, 2012, the 11-song set aligns the characteristically diverse and adventurous guitarist with a cadre of brilliant guests, including trumpeter Randy Brecker; saxophonist Kenny Garrett; and drummers Dave Weckl, Keith Carlock and Lionel Cordew. Also on hand is a delegation of high-caliber electric and acoustic bass players: Esperanza Spalding, Richard Bona, Victor Wooten, Anthony Jackson, Dave Holland, Tom Kennedy, Will Lee and Victor Bailey.

I ve been playing a lot of different kinds of great music with a lot of different musicians on some of my more recent records, says Stern, whose Big Neighborhood released on Heads Up in 2009 followed a similarly eclectic vibe. I love bebop, swing, rock, all the stuff that a lot of guitar players especially jazz players tend to include in their music. It s the nature of the instrument, but very much a part of my nature as well. There s a lot of music that really inspires me, and it usually covers quite a few territories.

The guitar tends to keep you open-minded, because you hear it in so many places, says Stern, listing many places he himself has ventured along the way not just on All Over the Place, but in earlier work as well. You hear it in rock, in country, in pop, in funk, in classical, you hear it in jazz, you hear it in so many kinds of music that you can immediately identify it on one level or another.

Stern is ready at a moment s notice to go to all of these places and more, and he s ready and willing to bring anyone along for the ride. Music, to me, is a language of the heart, he says. I hope people will get some emotional payoff from what I ve done on this recording. That s the vibe that I continue to go for with all of my music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet from Mike Stern July 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am a huge fan of Mike Stern, have all his cds, and have seen him live many times.

On this cd, he has outdone himself, going one step beyond Who Let the Cats Out?
Great songwriting is the strong feature of the recording and despite the variety of styles of tunes written, the whole album fits together beautifully. Mike's usual great soloing is on the cd, but the solos are short and sometimes it is hard to tell where the songwriting ends and where the solo begins. And that's a good thing.

Rather than using one band for the whole recording, Mr. Stern uses different musicians on each track. There is a long list of top-rate players. Three tracks feature the rhythm section of Dave Holland and Al Foster and it is wonderful to hear this fantastic jazz bassist and drummer interact with Mike. Other tracks feature Stern's usual cohorts and other top fusion players.

The list of bass players is a who's-who of great players and one of them, Victor Wooten, turns in an outstanding performance. His solo on Half Way Home is beautiful and highly musical, not his usual slap display, but of course it shows his incredible technique which serves his musical statement perfectly.

Run and get the cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this album. August 16, 2012

Mike Stern's "All over the place" is a wonderful release. It features Richard Bona, Kenny Garrett, Randy Brecker and Esperanza Spaulding just to name a few. The compositions are strong, and I can describe it best by saying this is one of those albums that is a joy to listen to all the way through. Mike's playing is terrific as are all the guests on this album. The title says it...the songs have many different styles and feels it truly is "All over the place"...but every one of them is a joy to hear. I keep going back to this in the car cd player. Love listening to this one while driving around town.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Great Music From Mike Stern & Company July 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
To the casual listener, Mike Stern's latest CD "All Over the Place" may sound like familiar territory but if you listen closely you will hear brand new beauty, fire and magic. For this offering, Mike Stern has assembled twenty-one highly talented musicians and the interplay between them is simply amazing. If you like artful improvisation performed by the crème de la crème in the Jazz music world and if you like Mr. Stern's ability to write highly evocative melodies, this CD is well worth your time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars top form January 24, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Mike tears it up with friends like Randy Brecker, Kenny Garret, and I love hearing Dave Holland with him! Mike continues to blend bebop, fusion, rock, blues, and more, and sounds amazing doing it! Regarding some of the comments that he's predictable... well, to each is own. Mike sounds like himself and no one else, that's for sure; and I don't think I've heard him in poor form. His current recordings are much different from what he was doing 20-25 years ago, and his song-writing continues to improve. Is he guilty of sounding like himself? Yes, as is Dexter Gordon, Mike Brecker, Miles, and on and on. And he doesn't veer in different directions like Pat Metheny? But predictable? Not really. Stern is at the top of his game, and sounds loose and relaxed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet disc! July 28, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Wonderful album. The "I love you" rewrite (ocd) alone is worth the price of admission. Great tunes, lots of variety - yes it sounds like Mike Stern's writing, because, well, Mike Stern wrote it. Not sure why some reviewers find that to be a problem. If you are reading this you are probably a Mike Stern fan. Heck, if you can even read, you should be a Mike Stern fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! November 24, 2012
By Linden
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Hesitated at first in purchasing this after reading the poor review in Downbeat, but recently got it as a longtime fan of Stern's. It ranks as one of his best, a great constellation of songs, musicians, and performances by Stern. He continues to evolve and demonstrates his amazing breadth and masterful playing. Disregard the bogus Downbeat review!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mike Stern hits a HOME RUN September 11, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Mike Stern is one of the most prolific and creative composers out there and his guitar playing is a wonderful blend of deep jazz line building finesse and rootsy blues-rock. A great CD laced with wonderful creative tangents from the likes of Esperanza Spaulding and Richard Bona just off the top of my head.

Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better Still February 5, 2013
By Miles

How does some one follow up Big Neighborhood? By being himself. Mike Stern is so impressive with how much better he gets as a musician and composer with each album. The playing is top notch with great guests!
