4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Compilation January 23, 2001
By Abbey
Format:Audio CD
The songs on this CD come from McGinley's first two CD's, with three unreleased songs, forming a really nice introduction to his music. McGinley feels most comfortable in the Folk/Country style of music, except for one country rocker, "Queen D'Ville" the rest of the songs flow in a warm acoustic sound. Mcginley's percusive guitar style is quite different from the strum or finger style sound heard in folk today. Having been compaired to Johnny Cash, Tom Rush and Guy Clark will give you some idea of sound of McGinley's rich and deep baritone. But for me it's the lyrics that make McGinley stand out from the rest of the crowd of singer/songwriters today. He write's about the simple, ordinary, day to day events that give our lives meaning and substance. These are not all happy songs, nor are they all depressing lost love songs, there is a mix, just like in life. The magazine "Performing Songwriter" said about McGinleys music, "his rich detailed writing is somewhere between the sadness of Townes Van Zandt and the humor of Guy Clark". I don't think you can find yourself in better company than that. I highly recomend this CD, as his first are out of print(due to BCN Records demise)
