As one of the key creators of the South Louisiana swamp blues sound in the 1950s, Lester has been often imitated but never duplicated. Blues fans worldwide prize his early singles on the Excello label that were recorded in Lake Charles, Louisiana. From town to town, his fans are… Read more in Amazon's Lazy Lester Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A+++++, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: All Over You (Audio CD)
Lazy Lester appears to be paying homage to some of his heroes on this new album(CD). He is playing, and singing up a storm, on some of his classics, revamped, and well rendered, with a real on-time back-up band. Then he'll be getting off into this Jimmy Reed ride, and doing a real good job of it. He also remembers Lightnin' Slim, by covering his; "Hello Mary Lee". Nice touch!Now, to be honest, I play this album from cover to cover, I like it all! But the crowning glory of this album is the way Mr. Johnson(Lazy L.) takes off into this solo groove, singing with his own guitar playing along. It made me think of John Lee Hookers', "Crawlin' Kingsnake", with a liberal dose of Lightnin' Hopkins, and Johnny Winter, thrown in for good measure. I love this. The only time I ever heard Lester sing with this limited accompaniment, was way back when, when he was accompanied by Kate Webster on piano, and moaned his way through the chilling; "Bloodstains". Man! That song will make the dogs howl!These two new solos; "Nothing But The Devil", and "My Home is a Prison", may be even better! It is an old Lightnin' Slim song that inspired this new version of "Devil", I have a total of four versions of this song, two by Lightnin' Slim, and two by Lazy Lester. This new solo is as good as any of them.Now "Prison", is a hauntingly masterful rendering of the old prisoners' lament, originally given to us by, Lonesome Sundown, one of the original Crowley Crew, who helped stir up this gumbo that is known as Bayou, or Swamp Blues. Lazy does the song exceeding justice, and gets the Lonesome Sundown signature guitar lick(ala:"Rolling Stone"), down to a tee!. You are almost sitting there in the cell with the guy! To me, this is the absolute essence of the blues! Robert Johnson couldn't have done it better!Lazy Lester is the last living bastion of the Bayou Blues Ethic, and he does a respectable job of putting it down for you on this album; All Over You", and it is aptly named, because it will sure get on you! Don't miss this one! I usually save the best for last, but seeing as how this is the first disc I've purchased in '99, I will have to reverse this tactic, because anything else I run across this year, will have a hard time topping this one!
