Book Description

August 8, 2006 3 - 7 years
In this merry, multi-species story cooked up with folksy warmth and humor, everybody gets a piece of the pie — and then some.

Grandma Cat makes a delicious apple pie, and there's plenty for everyone — and even a piece left over. Grandma Mouse finds a piece of apple pie, and there's plenty for everyone — and even crumbs left over. Grandma Ant spies some crumbs of apple pie, and there's plenty for everyone. But what's left over after cats, mice, and ants have had their fill? Little readers will eat up this scrumptious, gently math-related story that's as sweet and satisfying as a fresh-baked dessert.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–Grandma Cats apple pie is devoured by her family, a mouse family, and a family of ants. The books charm is in the joyous, deliciously appealing pen-and-ink and watercolor spreads detailing the domestic life of each group and in the repetitive narrative structure of the story, which has very few words. Little Brother Mouse ate a piece./Big Sister Mouse ate a piece./Momma Mouse ate a piece./Poppa Mouse ate a piece./Grandma Mouse ate a piece./Six crumbs were left./And then the mice took naps. A natural for storyhours, this title will be savored by listeners just discovering the delicious world of books.–Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME

From Booklist

This genial picture book begins with Grandma Cat making an apple pie. After Little Brother, Big Sister, Momma, Poppa, and Grandma each eat a slice, the cats contentedly take naps. While they sleep, the Mouse family carts off the last piece of pie to its own snug home. After Little Brother, Big Sister, Momma, Poppa, and Grandma Mouse share their pie, the mice snuggle down for naps, too. While they sleep, the ant family carries off the crumbs, polishing off all the remaining pie. Meanwhile, Grandma Cat awakes and makes another pie, this time with help from all the cats, mice, and ants. This book lends itself well to reading aloud, for children will enjoy chiming in with the many repeated lines in the story. Washed with watercolors in warm, tawny hues, the ink drawings create a series of charming domestic scenes featuring jovial families of the various species. Good fare for young children. 5.0 out of 5 stars A warm and cozy book September 29, 2008
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. It's very simple and a quick read, but what really makes are the illustrations which are detailed and create a "warm and cozy" feel for the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars LIke stone soup, apple pie can make friends May 14, 2008
Format:Hardcover
Grandma Cat's apple pie has one piece left over, which the mice nibble on and leave a few crumbs for the ants. If you take an apple pie (or MAKE an apple pie) be sure to cut it so there will be one piece left. And then divide that piece into pieces for the "mice" and be sure to save some crumbs for the "ants" in your group. THere's good math to be made out of pie, and you could make this into a good fractions lesson (what is a sixth of a sixth?) or just a fun way to do a measurement lesson. There's always time to start "cooking up reading."

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun! Not for teeny babies though. January 5, 2011
Format:Paperback
My boy was 22 mos when I bought this book. We bought it in the Fall to celebrate that season. The pictures are not as stark and vibrant as most books for this age group, and they took some getting used to for my boy.

Now, after numerous readings of this book, it has become absolutely one of his favoritest books. He asks for it by saying "yes yes yes yes yes!" which is a line repeated in the book. When you read the book, I recommend adjusting your voice to make a difference between the cat/mouse/ant voices because that seems to be a distinction that delights the child.

A huge favorite!!
