Quiet "Rage",
This review is from: All The Rage (Audio CD)
Zach Braff's indie hit "Garden State" did more than have a soundtrack: It introduced the mainstream to a bunch of great bands like the Shins, Frou Frou and so on. One of the most spellbinding is Cary Brothers, a rugged-looking singer-songwriter with a heartbreaker voice. His EP "All the Rage" looks unassuming, but pulls you into his beautiful mix of acoustic ballads and powerpop.
It opens with the now-well-known "Blue Eyes," a soaring acoustic song that ends wistfully with "I just wanna sing a song with you," followed by the delicate ballad "Something." "Supposed to Be" switches gears into some solid powerpop, complete with Brothers' solid riffs and twisting basslines. Finally he finishes up with another gentle acoustic ballad, the poignant "Honestly." Don't let the grocery-bag brown slipcase fool you: L.A.-based Brothers is the very image of a good musician with zero hype. His debut EP has that Elliott Smith vibe, but without the sound of doom -- Brothers sounds sad, hopeful and wistful, calmly reminiscing all about love. Brothers has an exceptional voice -- in "Supposed to Be," he sounds distant and a little haughty, as befits the music. But in the ballads his vocals become much more intimate and sweet. He does his own basic instrumentation (bass and guitar) himself, with help from Jason Kanakis (guitar) and Chad Fischer (drums, bass, and keys). These three guys have a good grip on what makes solid ballads and rock music. His songwriting is particularly good. It's all about love, by the way -- hoping for love, having love, losing love, looking back on love. "All the lights on and you are alive/But you can't point the way to your heart," Brothers croons, "So sublime, when the stars are aligned/But you don't know/You don't know the greatness you are." Cary Brothers' "All the Rage" is a rare treat -- its main flaw is that it isn't more than four songs long. Here's hoping for a full-length album of this gorgeous music.

"All the Rage" is very melodic and moving - I listen to it over and over and love it. It's one of those cds that keeps getting better each time you listen to it! I had heard Blue Eyes on the "Garden State" Soundtrack, but am truly blown away by Cary Brothers' talent, range and versatility. Each song takes you on a journey. I honestly cannot wait for the next recording from this very talented musician (and judging by the demo songs posted on his website, I will not be disappointed). This is a musician who is destined to be a huge success. I highly recommend this cd!

Great songs, fantastic guitar playing and a cool vibe that is so hard to find these days on ANY album of modern music. This is a great collection of songs from a brand new indie hero.

Cary Brothers has it: the ability to write a song full of emotion and capture it succinctly in his lyrics; add a beautiful melody and heart-melting vocals and you've got the whole package.
Cary's song "Blue Eyes" was featured on the Garden State soundtrack. All of his songs are of equal, if not greater depth. You won't be disappointed with this EP. Go to his website www.carybrothers.com for more music downloads and info about when his full length CD will be released.

This is a shamelessly gorgeous album. Its mellow and smooth, so many other groups have done this, but none have brought it to a level that he has. I first heard the song 'Blue Eyes' last week in the middle of autumn, simply amazing. get this ep.

I saw Cary Brothers perform live at the Hotel Cafe on September 7, and I was completely blown away. He is just incredible. This EP haunts me. The lyrics are finely crafted, the melodies are smooth, and his voice lingers in the back of your mind. It's hard to pick a favorite, but "Honestly" is just beautiful. If you are thinking about buying this CD, then do it. You will not be disappointed.

I love this EP. The packaging is very simple and without polish, but the music speaks for itself. My first exposure to Cary's music was off the "Garden State" soundtrack and was very impressed. Leading with his song "Blue Eyes", the album takes you on a musical journey with four well-written tracks showcasing not only his lyrical talent, but excellent instrumentation.

i love this EP - i found out about cary brothers the same way i found out about joshua radin. both EP's are excellent freshman releases and i know these guys are going to be huge soon. well, actually, brothers is on the garden state soundtrack and radin is a "scrubs" favorite - i heard through the grapevine that radin sold another song to "scrubs" for this upcoming season. i just want to see them play together because i heard they're good friends. so write both of them - www.carybrothers.com and www.joshuaradin.com and tell them to tour together.
