Biography

Forming in 1984, Ween self-released several experimental-rock albums on cassette before eventually signing to Twin/Tone Records in 1989. A burgeoning cult fan-base saw them signing to Elektra, and 1992's Pure Guava brought them to wider attention. Chocolate and Cheese (1994) was another big hit with critics. Although the band have never really been commercially successful, their bizarre humour and… Read more in Amazon's Ween Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-have, but only for fans, December 16, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: All Request Live (Audio CD)
Ween's "All Request Live" is an excellent album. It contains tunes that span almost their entire career of making albums together - just about a decade and a half now. The five-part Stallion "trilogy" is a highlight for me. It's great hearing them try to make it sound as close as possible to the originals on parts one and two, and then four and five are great because they were never released and it was my first time hearing them - both of them are awesome, by the way. And as for The Stallion part Three, well, nothing will ever come close to the absolute euphoria of the original, though the version on this cd is still very good.

I think the best parts on this cd are when they do those really old songs that were, for the most part, heard exclusively on the original albums. I'm under the impression that people requested those mainly for the reason that they were rarely, if ever, played live. The longer, more jammed-out Reggaejunkiejew is a good example of this, as well as Mononucleosis, which is absolutely beautiful. But for me, the most rewarding "song" is the hilarious and unforgettable Pollo Asado.

That being said, I would like to emphasize that if you don't already own every single Ween album, or close to it, I would recommend buying those and becoming familiar with them before you get this. It's not that you need to be "initiated" as some folks would say, but this album was intended for those long-time fans that really wanted to hear these tunes. Trust me, once you get some of their earlier albums like The Pod and Pure Guava, you will shreik with delight when you finally hear what some of those same songs sound like on this album, "live in the studio." Man, it is rare for a band that's been around as long as Ween has to put out anything this raw.

If you do own most of the Ween catalogue, however, then this will definitely make a worthy addition to your collection.

Because Amazon hasn't listed it for some reason, I will now paste the tracklist:

1) Happy Colored Marbles

2) The Stallion Part 1

3) The Stallion Part 2

4) The Stallion Part 3

5) The Stallion Part 4

6) The Stallion Part 5

7) Demon Sweat

8) Cover it with Gas and Set it on Fire

9) Awesome Sound 10) Cold Blows the Wind

11) Pollo Asado

12) Reggaejunkiejew

13) Tried and True

14) Mononucleosis

15) Stay Forever

16) Where'd the Cheese Go?

4.0 out of 5 stars good for diehard fans, mostly., December 12, 2004

If you're looking for something capturing the "real" Ween live experience captured on record, Live At Stubb's is probably a better bet. What this here is is a selection of little-heard-live songs in their catalog, as voted on by fans, played in a studio with no audience for a live webcast. Aside from a few of the more tuneful fan favorites (the traditional japanese death ballad "cold blows the wind", which is amusingly announced as being "about a dead b*tch", the Love homage "tried and true", and the powerballad "stay forever", among a few others), the focus here is on the band at their most out there. It certainly is a treat to hear stuff from their more "homemade" sounding early releases like Pure Guava and The Pod get full band treatment: In particular "Demon Sweat" loses it's murkyness and becomes more majestic, and "Reggaejunkiejew" benefits hugely in the groove department thanks to live drums and bass, making the Pure Guava version sound stiff in comparison. Probably the coolest thing about this disc is hearing all 5 parts of the Stallion "trilogy" (two of which were previously unreleased) in a row. It's just really interesting to hear them go from the amusingly aimless first two parts as heard on The Pod to the increasingly majestic pomp rock of parts 3-5. Both unreleased "Stallion" songs are worth hearing, part 4 being a Ziggy Stardust-esque bit of flamboyant glam, and part 5 storming in with a galloping "Children Of The Grave" type metal riff. And of course there's also the 6 minute version of their infamous 30 second Pizza Hut jingle that just defies description. While it's probably not the best introduction to the band for neophytes, this album is a must for diehard fans who savor the "brown" sound of their first few albums but wish it were more fleshed out.
