5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Good!
Peter Rowan will one day be recognized for his genius. This guy writes/plays/sings a wide range of styles and does it well. This particular album has country/western leanings with a dark lonesome feel. It is very very good. Wouldn't leave home without it.

3.0 out of 5 stars wild rockabilly!
I like the first three songs on the album tremendously, also track number 9 is pretty good. The rest of the CD is a little too funky for me. If you like traditional bluegrass this isn't your style. I love Dwight Yoakam but Peter Rowan is even more far out than Dwight. I bought the CD for track 1 & 3, I love the songs. If it hadn't been for those 2 songs, the CD...

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted lyrical and musical treat, October 14, 2009

One of my favorite albums by Rowan. I'm not a bluegrass fan and I enjoy Rowan's music. He is a musical craftsmen (like Guy Clark) who composes songs with thoughtful lyrics (often stories) and excellent music. It helps that he has friends like Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush but Rowan is no slouch as a guitarist himself

Some of my favorites on this album are: Midnight Highway - great beat, sweet harmonies, Howlin' at the Moon - unabashed tribute to a liberated woman, Undying Love - sweet romantic images and harmonies, Wheel of Fortune - evocative nostalgic lyrics, lovely dobro by Douglas, and John O'Dreams - beautiful melody borrowed from Tchaikovsky, wonderful dream images. Deal With the Devil I like for the story and imagery even though I don't care as much for the music. The weak song in my opinion is Freedom Walkabout. I don't care for Reggae, but even there the lyrics are thoughtful.

The album has a good mixture of upbeat songs and sweet melodic slower songs. I highly recommend the album as an introduction to Rowan or any Rowan fan who doesn't already own it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one made me a believer, October 22, 2002

I'd heard and loved Peter Rowan's music before, but "Behind These Prison Walls Of Love" turned my musical life around. That song and this album made him my favorite singer. Good mix of material where no one song sounds like any other, from the fast-paced and upbeat "Midnight Highway" to the soothing "John O'Dreams". As he does on all his albums, he mixes his own material (always beautiful and thought-provoking) with carefully selected traditionals or covers. Jerry Douglas' dobro works its magic as well.

This is my first Peter Rowan CD so I can't compare it to his other work.
