Editorial Reviews

All Screwed Up is the exuberantly funny tale about the often tragic adventures of a group of young immigrants who have come to Milan to make their fortunes. In addition to Adelina and Carletto, there are Gigi, who drifts into a life of petty crimes, Isotta, who becomes a prostitute, and Sante and Mariuccia, who marry in bliss and, in two years, are something less than blessed with seven children (one set of twins followed by quintuplets). They all soon discover that Milan is a town where everything is in its place but nothing is in order. FIRST TIME EVER ON DVD OR BLU-RAY! FROM ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED FILMMAKER FILMMAKER LINA WERTMULLER (SEVEN BEAUTIES, SWEPT AWAY)

This long unavailable (suppressed?) Wertmuller film is perhaps hard to follow only because it's unfamiliar and doesn't come with all the laurels of her better-known hits. It's actually rather good, if a little uneven, and captures the spirit of early 70s social ferment in Italy. Underrated but worthy, especially for fans of Wertmuller and Italian cinema.

The effect of urbanization on Italian society get an unflinching treatment by this director. Not as great as some of her other available films. What happened to Wertmuller anyway.

My wife and I are huge Lina Wertmuller fans from her movies starring Giancarlo Giannani. We couldn't make it all the way through this movie, which we found to be somewhat boring and not very funny.

Although I am a fan of Lina Wertmuller, and although the first third of this film has the ironic humor of some of her other films, the basic theme of a small group of "other" Italians who descend upon Milan to find work and soul mates slowly becomes depressing and violent. The acting is fine, and the camerawork - as always - is excellent; but the storyline goes astray when two of the lovers give birth to - first - twins and within a year, quintuplets. The best line comes early in the flick when one of the girls explains she will kiss, but "from the neck down I'm concrete" - later excusing this attitude with "I'm Sicilian."

A poorly focused mishmash. There are a few interesting scenes like the one in the slaughter house which is cinematic poetry. Attempts at social commentary are thrown into the tale of two rural misfits in the city. A rather troubling seduction/rape doesn't add to the value of the film. One expects better from Wertmuller!
