Editorial Reviews

Review

Mort Weiss' return to the jazz scene is one of the happier events in the jazz world of the 21st century. --Scott Yanow, critic, reviewer and internationally acclaimed writer and jazz historian

Mort Weiss plays with accretions of sound, color and emotion. --Don Heckman, jazz critic for the Los Angeles Times

Product Description

Since his return to the scene seven years ago he has played in concert with vibe king Terry Gibbs and appeared with the B-3 master Joey DeFrancesco. When asked for a quote from Joey D. he replied 'Mort plays his ass off!' Mort's latest recording All Too Soon with the great Ron Eschete' playing seven string guitar is his seventh and best effort. The duo play everything from Bird, Monk, Jobim, Mandell and more. If you like BeBop, Post Bop, Straight Ahead and the Great American Songbook this album is a MUST!

This review is from: All Too Soon (Audio CD)
As if his incredible story weren't enough, Mort lays it all on the line on this, his most recent and most satisfying album to date. It all comes down to clarinet and guitar, mining jazz standards that have been played enough times to give the listener a "standard" of reference. There's no room for pretense and poses nor space for lying low or hiding in the darkness. Weiss' clarinet is shimmering and scintillating one moment, dark and suggestive of dangerous beauty the next. Never has Jobim's "O Grande Amour" received a more heartfelt treatment--raw enough to strike a nerve; sufficiently accomplished to heal it. Critical to making it all possible is the masterly artistry of Ron Eschete's 7-string guitar, whether in a solo role or one of several different accompanying modes. One can only hope that any reader capable of being offended by Weiss' candid liner notes is equally sensitive to the beauty--honest, "earned," direct and communicative--to be found in the disc's musical content.
