I am a Reading Specialist and I use this book all the time to reinforce recognition of phonetic patterns. A "sort" is an activity where the child places words under appropriate headings. For example, one sort might be the two spellings of the digraph 'ou' as in "proud" and as in "crowd." The headings would be "ou" and "ow." While this may seem too easy, it in fact involves careful visual scanning and the intellectual exercise of categorizing. The physical movement of placing the word in one column or another provides kinesthetic involvement as well. I highly recommend that the child or children using the sort read the words aloud. Not only is this great practice, but children enjoy the format.

The book is extremely easy to use - just xerox the page of sorts which cover the phonics you want children to practice and cut them apart. When I notice that a child is having trouble with a particular phonetic pattern, I just find the relevant exercise in the book. It's amazing how effective these sorts are in helping children read with more fluency.

The word sorts are perfect classroom exercises. I wish this book were available in an online version so that I could print them out instead of having to make copies for the classroom.

These sorts are a great supplement or replacement to picture sorts. The sorts include CVC sorts, consonant blends, long vowels, diphthongs and digraphs. This book is perfect for helping us to supplement our OCR phonics program and helps us differentiate amoung the early spelling stages. I will definitely get the next book in the series if I go back to teaching upper grades.

The book has several word sorts for elementary children. Teachers will need to mix in a variety of word study activities, as word sorts will become boring and mundane for students.
