Editors came on the scene pretty much out of nowhere in 2005 with their fabulous debut album "The Back Room", which I like to call UK's response to Interpol's equally fantastic "Turn On the Bright Lights" debut album. This is one of the (many) singles from "The Back Room".

"All Sparks" (3 tracks; 13 min.; plus 1 video) brings one of the best songs from "The Back Room", and what a delight that song remains to this day. It is followed by a non-album track "From the Outside", a more pensive tune, and not a bad one at that, but it's easy to see why this didn't make the album cut as it simply wouldn't have fitted in. The best track on here, though, is the "All Sparks (Cicada Remix)", a delightful retuning of the song, more dance-oriented but not redone in such a way that you wouldn't recognize the original tune, just great. This single also contains the video the band made for "All Sparks".

In all, this is a great addition to the early Editors catalog. The band has just released its third album, which is a major departure from its first two albums, abandoning electric guitars and instead reinventing itself as Ultravos for the 21st century. Judge for yourself. Meanwhile, this "All Sparks" single is a must-have for Editors fans.

Pick up both this single and "Munich" if you love modern music with that 80s new wave dance sound. Alone, the editors are a harder guitar driven retro-80s band, but once they give their songs to Cicada to be remixed, they get a great 80s alternative dance sound. Let's hope for more Cicada remixes of their songs.
