5.0 out of 5 stars All-Star Is Right!!, May 23, 2002
This review is from: The All Star Gospel Session (HBO) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape is wonderful.Taped live at the First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood,California it features Paul Simon as emcee and a host of some of the finest voices on the planet.I can never get tired of hearing The Edwin Hawkins Singers cut loose on Oh Happy Day or my man Luther Vandross signing Sam Cooke's Change is Gunna Come. Paul Simon begins Bridge Over Troubled Water solo, only to have Jennifer Holliday join in with a chorus that'll give your goosebumps, goosebumps. This is powerful and inspirational vocalizing.Big medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The MUSIC fills your soul - Vandross at his unmatched BEST, April 4, 2004
This review is from: The All Star Gospel Session (HBO) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For the life of me I cannot imagine why this title is not available as a SOUNDTRACK or at least issued in DVD format. It IS a compilation of knock-me-down-and-lift-me-up performances by some of the greatest voices in our country.

You do not have to be a Christian to be moved to tears by these performances...the sheer beauty of those VOICES! The could be singing "lalalalalala" and it would STILL be some of the very best singing I will ever hear in my life.

**The performance of "Change is Gonna Come" by Luther Vandross in this Session is not only beautiful to see (Oh, is he looking BEAUTIFUL), but his voice has a resonance and soaring beauty that is UNMATCHED IN ANY OTHER SONG recording of his that I have in my considerable collection of Vandross.

Never mind the knockout performances of Jennifer Holliday, Edwin Hawkins, Andre Crouch, THE CHOIR! I could go on forever about how much I love this music. If ANYONE HAS ANY IDEA how one goes about lobbying the owner of this Master tape/recording to release this as a soundtrack or at least DVD, let me know somehow!

This review is from: The All Star Gospel Session (HBO) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Don't lament its unavailability on DVD just because the name was changed.
I have long owned this DVD and LaserDisc and have watched this show many time. Don't miss it.
