THE CHALLENGE OF THE LONE STAR:

Our quilting ancestors (and some current-day perfectionists) created each of the 8 pieced-diamond spokes of the Lone Star by marking, cutting, and joining umpteen bazillion individual diamonds. Over the last 20 years or so, standard strip-piecing methods have made the process a bit faster. I made a miniature Lone Star once to sample that method, and quickly discovered the key issues in Lone Star construction:

1) Humpy center
2) Bulky seams everywhere
3) Set-in seams

SO WHAT'S NEW HERE?

While strip-piecing has been used before in Lone Stars, authors Helen Frost and Blanche Young use a "staggered strip-set" to create the pieced diamonds. This very nifty method creates one complete spoke (i.e. pieced diamond) from just one joined strip-set. (Prior "new" strip methods had you create several strip-sets for each spoke. For a recent example of this, see Eleanor Burns' Radiant Star Quilts.)

BUT ARE THERE SET-IN SEAMS?

Yes. Lots of the little beasts. But if you have been avoiding quilts that use set-in seams, the results in this book might just make you want to persevere. Kick your skills up a notch and be fearless. Set-in seams will open up a whole new world of quilting for you.

WHAT'S THE DOWNSIDE TO THIS NEW METHOD?

Each strip in each strip-set will need at least one un-sewing (all inner strips require two). If you're familiar with the "tube" method used for Trip Around The World quilts, maybe you don't mind having to use a seam-ripper (also known more affectionately as "reverse sewing") to get great results.

This is a beautiful book with clear instructions. Helen is following in her mother Blanche's hard to fill footsteps and is doing an admirable job. Hope Blanche is still well and happy.

I have been quilting for several years, but only recently have been venturing past simple patchwork. I always thought a lonestar quilt was out of my skill zone. That is, until I bought this book.

All-Star Quilts walks you through every step of the way, from fabric selection, to cutting the fabric, to piecing the stars, to dreaded y-seams, and finally mitered borders. Strip piecing with precision cutting and piecing makes it much easier than it looks. I just finished piecing the top of a quilt based of the pattern on the cover of this book, and was shocked at how well it went together. The patterns are brilliant. I want to make all of them!

More than just the patterns in the book, I feel like this book gives you the skills to design your own star quilt, with creative layouts and color choices. It is a true skill builder. Even if I don't make another quilt directly from one of the patterns in this book, I will absolutely use it as a reference.

Shipping was fast. Book was in excellent condition, just like new. Price was right. Transaction's experience was superb. My wife will enjoy doing the projects in this book. If you can find this selection, you need not purchase the earlier volume by the same author, as there is sufficient overlap to not warrant owning the older book from the 80's.

Loved the different quilts pictured in this book. The projects are not for the time constricted or faint of heart, but the quilts are wonderful.
