1.0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST-AVOID Racing Game!!!, March 5, 2003
This review is from: All Star Racing (Video Game)
All Star Racing seemed like a dream when I found it used at a favorite gaming store: four types of racing (GT, classic cars, stock cars, and supercars) in one game!!! Assuming that the standard "work your way up through the ranks" gameplay would be required, I felt this could be an interesting and fun game providing some good challenges along the way.

Unfortunately, even though I bought this game (used) at a rather low price, I still felt rather cheated. About the only positive things in this game are: 1.) four types of racing; 2.) vibration function compatible; 3.) NO memory card required. However, the good things about the game sadly end here; in fact, the BEST thing about All Star Racing is the cover art :-(

The main problem with All Star Racing is that there is virtually NO car control. The cars barely respond to turning inputs from the player, and SLIDE instead of actually turn. There is also absolutely NO sense of speed in this game, which means that the player is forced to keep one eye on the speedometer in order to know how much braking is required to safely "turn" at each corner. Whenever turning is attempted, the sliding of the cars produces "tire squeals" which sound more like a heavy chair being dragged across a wooden floor.

Also, there is no standard "work your way up through the ranks" gameplay in All Star Racing. Instead, the game consists of four separate games all included on a single disc. Each game (one for each type of vehicle competition mentioned above) has "customization options," which are strictly limited to centering the screen and activating the controller's vibration function. Starting a game allows the player to select a racing difficulty, one of three vehicles, and one of three race venues. There is NO qualifying, nor is there a tuning option to help the cars to handle better. The graphics are also rather poor, especially for a game released in 2002; even the original Gran Turismo has better graphics overall!!!

While loading times are not truly lengthy, they are still not particularly short. Audio tends to skip in the stock car racing game, and this causes the CPU to falter greatly when trying to return to the main menu (where each game is selected).

Truly the only persons who would enjoy All Star Racing are VERY young kids. Even then, the lack of vehicle turning ability is likely to frustrate them greatly. While young kids will likely find the Mad Duck logo intriguing, the logo alone simply cannot "make" the game.

In short, this is one game which should definitely be avoided at all costs.
