Biography

One of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the 20th Century, Edward "Duke" Ellington led a band from the early 1920s until his death in 1974. He composed new material relentlessly, specifically writing to get the best out of his band members. In the late 20s his band earned a residency at Harlem's Cotton Club, which brought nationwide fame to Ellington, as their performances were… Read more in Amazon's Duke Ellington Store

4.0 out of 5 stars A great, laid-back performance, December 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: All Star Road Band, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This is a 1957 live recording of a dance in middle-of-nowhere Pennsylvania. The setlist is standards, the pulse is suitably dancable, and the music is great. This is an experienced band on the road, playing a small gig, and relaxing. The music shows this: it's laid back, well played. One of my favorite Ellington records (not that I'm an expert; I've only heard half a dozen or so).
