Beautiful instrumental indie rock blah blah,

Whatever you want to call this kind of music -- the kind of instrumental indie rock that comes from bands like Tristeza and Mogwai, and to a lesser degree Godspeed You Black Emperor! and A Silver Mt. Zion; the kind that displays incredible aesthetic appeal and musicianship; the kind that isn't afraid to rock when rocking is clearly called for; the kind that seems kinda Prog-rock-ish if you don't think about it too much -- this is some of the best of that kind of music you will ever hear. I caught this band live a couple of weeks ago, and they made me a believer. This record is so extremely well done, it makes me wonder why the members of this band haven't all packed it up and gone home, back to more ordinary jobs and more ordinary days, reluctant to try to ever do anything this good again. Because my heart tells me it can't get any better. God help you, less fortunate bands, if you try to release a record in this genre ever again. God help you.

This EP is so good, that words cannot do it justice. They thought so too and exercised restraint (no lyrics) on this album. It is a departure from the previous album From the Vapor of Gasoline (which is also a very good album) in other ways, too, however; it features a more delicate production and more intricate interplay between the instruments. The production is such that it highlights the timbre of each instrument and, thus, their interdependency, whereas the previous album seemed content to let everything settle into a murky consistency at various points (usually when things started to rock). FTVOG also had the problem of being a bit monotonous (of course: in the end, you grew to enjoy it for all its shortcomings). All the Suits Began to Fall OFf seems to be flawless, however - a well-rounded tour; very beautiful, bold and particular. Try if you like: John Fahey, Tortoise, June of 44, Sea Tiger, etc.

This band (along with The Album Leaf) is definitely the most inspiring band that I've heard in a long time. Meaty bass lines, unerring percussion, the spine tingling vibraphones, and the weaving melodies of guitar and cello really show how powerful subtilities can be. It's really worth it to take an opportunity to sit back and let this ep unfold before you, taking note of each layer as it progresses. I can't wait to finally see them live.

Good CD for its genre and The Mercury Program. Enjoyable. More drums/percussion than Confines of Heat.

Well made post-rock in the refined Tortoise vein is a delectable EP of soothingly progressive instrumentals.

The Mercury Program is a great band, and in my opinion, this EP best showcases what I like about them. Quality bass lines, and great instrumentals will chill you out, but also keep you tapping your foot. For quite a while this was my go to driving CD. Track #2 is especially great for cruising on a curving highway. They're great live too! See them if you get the chance!

The Mercury Program have done it again.. I'm not going to go in to in much, but if you liked their past albums, this is amazing... A truly piece of art. The best produced, engineered and sounding album MP has come up with to date. The music is instrumental, 5 tracks of pure feelings. More soft and melodic than their past albums, anyone who plays instruments or enjoys actual talent should pick this up. Listen to the samples, PLEASE dont skip out on an opportunity to experience such a great band. Refer to "From the vapor of gasoline" reviews for more on their sound-likes and reviews. |
