Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Emrys of the Fae has been given a new assignment: Guard the life of England's Prince Richard. The young royal has frustrated all the previous guards with his wild ways, but Emrys sees beyond his bad boy act and forms an instant connection with him. She allows Richard to see her, something the Fae are not supposed to do, and the attraction between the two is ignited. Meanwhile, dark forces are gathering to destroy the mortal world, and the British monarchy is the focus of their efforts. Once the royals are eliminated, all protection for other mortals will be gone, clearing the way for evil underworld forces to claim the world as theirs alone. When Richard becomes king after the assassination of his father, Emrys readies herself for attacks on Richard's life, but it soon becomes clear that the battle is bigger than she imagined and there are very few she can trust. Her love for Richard leaves her with a choice-a mortal life with him or life as a Fae apart from Richard forever. Filled with action, humor, and romance, All that Glows is an engaging debut.—Kathy Kirchoefer, Henderson County Public Library, NC

From Booklist

Beautiful Emrys is a member of the Faery Guard and old by human standards (she remembers Camelot), but she is still a relative “youngling” among her people. She is therefore considered the ideal candidate to provide invisible protection for the teenage heir to the British throne, the fun-loving and very Prince Harry–like Prince Richard. Sparks fly, however, when she meets the prince, and she cannot resist abandoning her invisibility and revealing herself to him, beginning a whirlwind romance. But when Richard’s father is assassinated by a rogue Faery power, they must fight for their lives as well as their love. Blending otherworldly glamour with contemporary glitz and suspense with passion, this book offers a lot to fantasy fans. Emrys’ adventure takes her from the shores of “tar-dark” lochs to the “flourishing, gold-leafed ceilings” of Windsor Castle. Though the writing occasionally suffers from awkward missteps, Emrys’ tale of romance and intrigue should appeal to fans of Holly Black’s Tithe (2002), Valiant (2005), and Ironside (2007) and Maggie Stiefvater’s Lament (2008) and Ballad (2009). Grades 8-11. --Paula Willey

All That Glows by Ryan Graudin
Publisher: Harper Teen

Rating: 4 stars

Summary (from Goodreads):

Emrys--a fiery, red-headed Fae--always embraced her life in the Highlands, far from the city's draining technology, until she's sent to London to rejoin the Faery Guard. But this isn't any normal assignment--she's sent to guard Prince Richard: Britain's notorious, partying bad boy and soon-to-be King. The prince's careless ways and royal blood make him the irresistible for the dark spirits that feed on mortals. Sweet, disheveled, and alive with adventure--Richard is one charge who will put Emrys's magic and heart to the test.

When an ancient force begins preying on the monarchy, Emrys must hunt through the London's magical underworld, facing down Banshees, Black Dogs and Green Women to find the one who threatens Richard's life. In this chaos of dark magic, palace murders and paparazzi, Emrys finds herself facing an impossible choice. For despite all her powers, Emrys has discovered a force that burns brighter than magic: love.

What I Liked:

When I first saw the cover of this book months ago, I was like, AHH, IT'S SO PRETTY! The cover model is pretty, but the cover design itself is rather breathtaking. I'm not a huge fan of pink, but I love the swirls of shades of pink and the occasional purple. The typography is stunning. I feel like the design team outdid themselves with this cover!

Anyway, the cover is beautiful, and oh my goodness, the WRITING STYLE is beautiful. There were so many wonderful parts to this book, including the writing style, the plot, the characters, the romance.

The author created a different concept with this book of having the Fae living in this century and being protectors of royalty. I loved the world the author created as it was full of elegance and lots of intrigue and action. Emrys was a character that it took me a while to get used to though because I had to get past all the constant talk of her stomach being upset because of all the technology she was around. Once I got over that part and was able to ignore all the references she really was a great character as she was so powerful and great at her job. I liked the way the Fae weren't supposed to reveal themselves to humans and there were consequences it they did so but I have to say I think it Emrys made the right choice in how she decided to guard Richard.

I loved seeing these two interact and their slow building romance was a welcome surprise and one that I was shocked to see happen. As we get further into the story we get to learn more about all the other things that are out there hunting down the Royals. The descriptions the author created of the Banshees,Black Dogs and Green Women made them seem so real and nothing I would want to run into in a dark alley. I liked the origins the author created behind them and what made them what the Fae needed to get rid of. We get more into this story and learn that Emrys may be facing her biggest challenge yet and she has to figure out how she will handle it all and make sure that Richard and the other royals stay alive.

Overall this was a nice read and when you find out who was behind it all you will be shocked as I didn't see that one coming. It was a nice twist and made a lot of since once I went back and thought about other events that happened along the way.

The first time I saw Ryan Graudin's debut novel, I was drawn to it. Not only by the incredible synopsis, but by the beautiful cover.
The story is everything the cover and the synopsis promises: it's full of magic, romance, action, danger, faeries and magical creatures. And Graudin has the ability to bring all the old magic to our new and modern world, without missing the unique touch that only the faerie world can bring to a story.

The story starts with Emrys magical world. She's a fae that ends up being the guard of Prince Richard. Simple right? Well, Prince Richard is known to party hard and be careless and that makes every faerie guardian have quite a difficult job. Prince Richard doesn't want to grow up and much else take the responsibility of being King, since he has plenty of time before that happens. But one incident changes everything.
Emrys ends up revealing herself to Prince Richard and, to her surprise, she doesn't want the Prince to forget about her. They start a dangerous and strange relationship and when all the magical and dangerous creatures try to kill Richard, they start to search for the one ordering the murder.
But Emrys has another battle to solve. An interior battle: will she leave her life as a Fae to be with Richard or will she try to live as a Fae without Richard? Will love be enough?

First of all, I loved this "forbidden" love between Richard and Emrys. She's not supposed to show her presence to Richard, but she does. And they end up having a funny relationship, starting as friends and ending up as much more.
