Biography

It all started in a small Ohio town. Her humble beginnings and passion for music have driven the 25-year old Crystal Bowersox to become one of the most recognized young voices and up and coming singer/songwriters in America, and soon, beyond.

Crystal's emotive folk-rock-country style was catapulted from the cramped coffeehouses and cavernous subway tunnels of Chicago to millions of ... Read more in Amazon's Crystal Bowersox Store

Editorial Reviews

Crystal Bowersox has made it her mission to live life and her music to the fullest. With a gentle warmth and wisdom well beyond her years, the consummate artist has an uncompromising vision of herself and her music that is refreshing and rare. It is this fortitude and courageous spirit that resonated with millions night after night when the 2010 American Idol runner up took the stage. Her rich amalgam of blues, country, folk and rock makes her one of the most dynamic young voices in music to come along in years. She has performed alongside everyone from Harry Connick Jr., Joe Cocker, and Alanis Morrisette, to Michael Franti, John Popper and BB King. All That For This, Crystal Bowersox s sophomore release and Shanachie Entertainment debut, is a powerful testament to her talents as both a singer and songwriter, as well as her unerring musical vision. It is the manifestation of her own womanhood and enlightenment won through hard fought battles, failures and triumphs. It is the belief that listening to your own inner voice will lead you where you need to be. I am learning not to judge music and myself so harshly and to not allow myself to be swayed by others judgment. I'm trying to listen to my own instincts more often. I can t convince someone who doesn't like my music to like it, but for the people who do, I want to play them another song, she says smiling. Until now, the world has witnessed only a portion of Crystal Bowersoxs talent, which was channeled through mainstream pop expectations on her debut release, Farmer s Daughter. With the highly anticipated release of All That For This (March 26, 2013), produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Sheryl Crow, John Lee Hooker, Raul Malo), Bowersox exposes a new dimension of her music. There are definitely more happier light-hearted moments on this record, confides the 27-year-old Portland transport. There are also touches of some of the darkest places and emotional states that I've been in my past. This album reveals a much more grateful and gracious side of me. It's the next chapter of my life.

I had mixed feelings when I opened Crystal Bowersox's latest CD. She is disarmingly charming and just always seems so happy and grounded, so I wanted to like it. But then there is that whole "AI" thing which seems to encourage singing that is more focused on belting out karaoke with drama than quality music. And while I did see one of her performances on that show, broadly and generally I'm kind of skeptical of the winnowing process.... So, yeah, I remember remarking "That girl's got pipes!" when I saw her on "Idol," but this album is a whole 'nother facet - lemme tell you, her talent runs deep. Almost scary when you think about it.

The songs on "All That for This" (awesome title, btw) skew modern-country in a Jewel-at-her-best sort of way. Crystal (hmmm, Crystal:Jewel? how random!) shows a great deal of range and her voice - whether she is singing pure or sexy - is always true. There is a nice pace to the album, and I've acquired the habit of restarting it immediately after listening. The song "Stitches" (with Jakob Dylan) is truly a masterpiece - pure heaven. And most of the other tracks are simply wonderful. Not too "hooky" - but pleasantly familiar from the first listen. The album has a very plush sound - not overproduced, but clearly they aren't striving for a minimalist approach here. The brushes on the cymbals and gospely flourishes can seem a bit indulgent at times, but there are real musicians and back-up singers on this album, not drum machines and over-dubs, so I'm willing to forgive a bit of overkill. Compared to her first record, this is a significant improvement. ATFT has better lyrics, a more consistent sound, and feels like a much more intentional work.

Crystal's musical advancement since her American Idol days is simply amazing. Her voice, always extraordinary, has ripened. The instrumentals on this album are more complex and sophisticated. And she is quite an insightful songwriter and musician. It is a real joy to hear just how much better she has become in just a couple of years.

Beautiful work.An immediate favorite album for me.

I absolutely love Crystal's voice, her spirit and her songs. There is something for everyone on this album -- a lot of variety and depth to the music and singing. Overall there is a bit more of a country-pop-alternative flavor to this album compared to more rock and roll influence in a few songs on the previous album (Farmer's Daughter).

Since buying this album I have also purchased Crystal's Once Upon A Time album of some earlier songs, which I love also being more like her stage shows -- without all the (sometimes slightly intrusive) back-up vocals and instruments prevalent in the All That For This album.

Crystal is one of the best female vocalists around, for sure! She makes any style of music sound fantastic.
