Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine

You can gauge some of the hopes and dreams of this "future music culture" of ours on what the Jungle Brothers have been doing these past few years. Their 1997 Raw Deluxe album was largely dismissed, but the smash Urban Takeover remix of the title track suggested an exciting interface of hip-hop and jungle — a fleeting moment, to be sure. They returned two years later with a new approach attuned to America’s brief fixation on British big beat, and a collaborative album — V.I.P. , with the Propellerheads’ Alex Gifford — was the unfortunate result.

For their latest effort, Mike G., Afrika and legendary house producer Todd Terry retreat to the familiar world of hip-hop, but only little of it seems familiar anymore. Adjusting to the times, Terry outfits the pair with some of rap’s current styles: "Booty Trap" sounds like Project Pat-lite; the inoffensive lilt of "Candy" is like late-‘90s R&B and Timbaland’s influence is all over the sputtering cycles and typewriter crunk of "Let Me." There are a few nods to the old school (in this case, hip-house and drum & bass), but their lyrics — mostly jump-up party-starters and mildly lascivious come-ons — suggest that the moment has sadly passed. All was released this past June in Europe as You in My Hut Now, a telling move since the JBs are probably better known on the rave circuit there than in the New York of today. Though this album is an earnest and intermittently good play for past glories, the sad lesson is that you can’t go home again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Jungle Brothers Album Worth Checking Out, January 9, 2003
This review is from: All That We Do (Audio CD)
I have personally been a fan of the Jungle Brothers for quite some time, and I have always appreciated Mike G. & Afrika Baby Bam's courage to always try new styles and sounds (for the most part) on each of their albums. That being said, I would not recommend this album to a first-time listener of the Jungle Brothers. Why? Because the Jungle Brothers have undergone a unique, natural progression/change in their sound that has been a result of their quest of experimentation. First listeners of the Jungle Brothers will most likely not be able to appreciate this progression by listening to "All That We Do" without having already been familiar with their past work. If a first-time listener wants to hear more of their old school-straight Hip Hop sound I'd recommend first listening to their past classics "Straight Out The Jungle," and/or "Done By The Forces of Nature"; additionally, if a first-time listener is more interested in the Jungle Brothers' more experimental/recent projects, I'd have to suggest "V.I.P." over "All That We Do" based on V.I.P.'s superior lyrical and musical content.

For those who are already well-familiar with the Jungle Brothers, "All That We Do" is not without its charms. Most songs are J.B. party starters, especially "You In My Hut Now," and "All That We Do," which are two singles sure to get any J.B. fan's head moving. "Candy" and "Let Me" are enjoyable, fun listens despite the Jungle Brothers' obvious attempts to make these songs "fit-in" more with today's more popularized, current rap styles.

All-in-all this is a good party-oriented, fun, (yet lyrically-simple) album for those who already appreciate the Jungle Brothers' past work, and those who enjoy a laid-back, positive Hip Hop album from a few of Hip Hop's Old School pioneers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jungle Brothers Bring Hip-Hop back to its roots, November 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: All That We Do (Audio CD)
In my opinon this album is a true element of what hip-hop is, when I brought this album I wanted to get away from the bling-bling of everyday music and hear something different.

When Hip-hop was at its best (80's) rappers rhymed about everything from streetwars, to blinging, to story telling, to comedy and even lovesongs. All that we do captured all that for me. They have a song called 'Candi' thats off tha chain I think raido will pick this up. Booty trap kinda reminds me of a 2002 Jimbrowski, it has a cool-out track and good vibe to it.

Let me put it on ya, shows that the JB's can flip the fast MCing and that they still have the skill to get biz. For all the drum-and bass heads out there they even got a joint for yall (cant remember the name) I highly recommend this album you will not be dissapointed.

ALL THAT WE DO IS THE ONE TO BY!!!
