Matt Maher's fourth project with Essential Records, All The People Said Amen, delivers raw, worshipful moments that draw the line between the divine and the everyday. Featuring brand new songs mixed with concert versions of fan favorites, the album perfectly captures the penetrating spirit and charisma Matt Maher's worship songs have become known for in a live setting. This compelling, 13-track journey Matt hopes will lead people, "back to their own hearts" and "prompt listeners to stop and ask some tough questions about who they are and where they are letting God maneuver in their hearts. And in doing that, experience the heart of the passion, death and resurrection."

The first single "Lord, I Need You" is a surefire hit song which also features Audrey Assad. It's exactly the type of catchy corporate worship song I've come to love from Matt Maher. The song features instantly sing-able vertical and prayerful lyrics: "Lord, I need You, I need You, every hour I need You, my one Defense, my Righteousness, Oh God how I need You." I sing along with the top of my lungs when Matt belts out, "Where You are, Lord I am free, holiness is Christ in me." Amen. Maher is best known for writing the worship anthems "Your Grace Is Enough" and "Christ Is Risen." There are incredibly energetic and moving live versions of those excellent songs on this album. The first three songs, "All The People Said Amen," "Alive Again" and "Burning In My Soul" all flow together with a Brit-rock musical style and plenty of energy and excitement about our relationship with Christ and how He transforms us, such as in "Alive Again" with the confessional proclamation: "I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out, I'm alive again!

Prime Cuts: Lord I Need You, All the People Said Amen, Mighty Fortress

Matt Maher's latest album cover of "All the People Said Amen" is most telling. A closer inspection of the cover reveals that it is a menagerie of old tour posters, handwritten lyrics from song writing sessions, candid photos with fans and even his very own wedding photos. Each item was purposefully chosen as the story behind each piece forming a collage that makes up who Maher is today. "All the People Say Amen" is a retrospective record where Maher pauses to take stock of God's shaping in his life by re-recording nine of his best known songs from his past three albums. These formerly released songs were recorded live over Maher's various tour settings, with three of them recorded before a college-aged crowd at the University of Notre Dame. But this record is far from just a nostalgic throwback to the past. Rather, teaming with Paul Moak (Third Day, Mat Kearney) at the helm, there are four new studio cuts interspersed between the live ones. And they find Maher co-writing with some of the best song writing scribes including Hillsong's Mia Fieldes and other fellow peers such as Christy Nockels and Kristian Stanfill.

Of the four new songs, "Lord I Need You" has been christened as the lead single. It does not take a genius to figure out why "Lord I Need You" was chosen. Featuring the gentle sweep of the guitar in its acoustically driven verse before exploding into an anthemic worshipful chorus, this paean is definitely going to be a worship classic in time. However, if "Lord I Need You" sounds familiar, it is because it was first cut was first cut by Chris Tomlin at the famed Passion Conference not too long ago.

In beginning this review I need to start with the confession that Matt Maher is the very reason that I got into contemporary Christian music in the first place, so there was no doubt that I would grab a copy of any new album of his as soon as it was available. Perhaps this makes me slightly biased toward Matt and his music, but since music like his elicits an emotional response, I think that it is perfectly reasonable to be at least a little biased!

As an album, "All the People Said Amen" is a sort of live greatest hits package, chronicling the past 10 years of Matt's career. For anybody familiar with Christian Worship Music this is quite an obvious choice, considering that the live setting is what praise and worship songs were made for. It also has a few new studio recordings thrown in, all of which are quite cool, with an absolute winner being the first single, "Lord, I Need You". This song is the second collaboration between Matt and his good friend Audrey Assad, the first being "Garden" which appeared on "Alive Again", and by the sounds of the results these guys should consider more collaboration work because it works!

My bias toward this album is primarily because it is a HUGE trip down memory lane for me. I had the great privilege of seeing Matt Maher on three separate occasions while in Australia for World Youth Day in 2008. Hearing these live versions of "Your Grace is Enough", "Great Things", "It is Good" and "Adoration" puts me straight back into the amazingly prayerful place that the band guided us into during World Youth Day.

The track that took me completely by surprise was the brilliant "completely cut loose and go for it" version of "On My Way".
