5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, July 9, 2005

This review is from: All the Things You Are (Audio CD)
This CD contains some interesting material not found elsewhere. Recorded live at Palace of Festivals Theatre in Cannes, France in January 1981 and January 1983, the disc features Metheny, Gary Burton, the Heath Brothers, Ahmad Jamal, and the Hum Trio. It is very hard to find and available only on the Fruit Tree (Italy) label (1999). Excellent sound quality.

Here's a track-by-track breakdown:

1) "Instrumental" is a previously unreleased 7:31 second solo-guitar performance by Pat. Awesome stuff.

2) "A Sassy Samba"

3) "Artherdoc"

4) "Move to the Groove"

5) "All the Things You Are"

The lineup for tracks 2)-5) is Pat (guitar & synth), Jimmy Heath (sax), Percy Heath (bass), and Albert Heath (drums). Great sax work by Jimmy Heath with beautiful chords and arpeggios from Pat backing him up. Pat solos clean and using several different synth sounds. "All the Things You Are" is an immense piece.

6) "Tones for Joan's Bones"

7) "Autumn Leaves"

Tracks 6)-7) bring us Gary Burton on the xylophone, Ahmad Jamal on the piano, Sabu Adeyola (bass), and Payton Crossley (drums).

Fans of Cannonball/Miles will know Autumn Leaves as the first song on "Something Else", and IMHO one of the greatest jazz pieces ever recorded. This rendition brings a great new interpretation. Both tracks offer breathtaking work by Ahmad, Sabu, and Payton. Resistance is futile.

8) "My Foolish Heart"

9) "No More Blues"

10) "This Night has a Thousand Eyes"

11) "African Flower"

The whopping 74.5 minutes on this disc are finished with these four songs, featuring Gary on the xylophone, Daniel Humair (guitar), Pierre Michelot (bass), and Rene Urtreger (drums). Gary really sounds great on these, especially 8) and 9) which present him solo. The last two tracks bring us more great rhythm section work.

Highly recommended, this CD will be irrestible to fans of quartet-format jazz or any of the artists, who seem to have been captured at their best.
