Sonny Rollins with Coleman Hawkins and Sonny Rollins with Herbie Hancock, August 20, 2011
This review is from: All the Things You Are (Audio CD)
All the Things You Are is a compilation album -- its 12 tracks are taken from three different albums. The discography is as follows:
1. Yesterdays
2. All the Things You Are
3. Summertime
4. Just Friends
5. Lover Man
6. McGhee
The first six tracks feature Coleman Hawkins on tenor saxophone and are taken from an album entitled Sonny Meets Hawk, released in the Fall of 1963. Along with Rollins and Hawkins, both on tenor sax, we find Paul Bley on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums.
7. Round Midnight
8. Now's the Time
9. Afternoon in Paris
These three selections were originally included on the album Now's the Time, released in September 1964. Joining Rollins are Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums.
10. Trav'lin' Light
11. It Could Happen to You
12. My One and Only
The final three selections were originally issued on the album The Standard Sonny Rollins, released in March 1965. The rhythm section for Trav'lin' Light is composed of Herbie Hancock on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Teddy Smith on bass, David Izenson on arco bass, and Stu Martin on drums.
For the last two songs the rhythm section is Hancock, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Micky Roker on drums.
I was drawn to this particular album because it included a number of tracks where Rollins shares space with his idol, Coleman Hawkins. I found these tracks, however, to be somewhat disappointing as they appear, to my ears at least, to reveal Rollins in somewhat of an avant-garde mode as he plays over, under, and around Hawkins' more mainstream phrases. In contrast, Rollins and Hancock seem to have reached a much more complementary style of performing together and the rest of the first-rate rhythm section helps to establish a dynamic framework for their soloing.
Recommended for fans of Sonny Rollins and also for fans of Coleman Hawkins. It is a decent compilation and very affordable.
