As good an early punk live album as you will find.,
This review is from: All This & More (Audio CD)
Unlike some of the other live albums that came out of the mid-to-late '70s NYC punk scene, this is as good or better than a lot of the Dead Boys' studio material. What sets this apart from most other live records (see Sid Vicious) is the fact that Stiv & Co manage to maintain the sneering ferocity and dynamism of their live show, without loosing too much of the sound quality in the process, (A live punk album from which you can actually discern the lyrics -- imagine that). As an added bonus, most of the DB's best material is well represented. Two versions of "Ain't Nothin' To Do," "Caught With The Meat In Your Mouth" & "Sonic Reducer" can be found on this 2 CD set. "All This & More" appears three times, as does the DB's cover of the Stooges classic "Search & Destroy." So, in summation, if you can find it, this would be a great album to pick up if you are either new to the Dead Boys, or an old fan looking for a supplement to their studio albums. The only thing missing is a cover of "I Wanna Be Your Dog," or "Chinese Rocks."

Must Have for Classic Punk Fans,
By
This review is from: All This & More (Audio CD)
As the other reviews have said, the sound quality is not A+, but this is still a classic collector's item for anyone who is a fan of 70's punk - especially if you were lucky enough to attend some of these shows.

Dead Boys Raw Live and Dirty,
By Voltmeter (Boston,Mass) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All This & More (Audio CD)
The Dead Boys were and are seminal fixtures in the development of American Punk. Their stage shows were intense, loud and bloody. This collection is a must have for the Dead Boys affecienado. However, if you've never heard these guys, then do yourself a favor and pick up "Young Loud and Snotty". "All This and More" is for the rabid D.B. fan only. It's very raw, and the boys were half in the bag during the show: the playing ranges from brilliant to incoherent, and if pure rawness ain't your cup of tea then stick to the studio releases. If you can ever find a copy of their second L.P. "We Have Come for Your Children" grab it. Not as earsplitting as "Young, Loud and Snotty" but brilliant nonetheless.

The first live band I ever saw. They opened for the Ramones in New Jersey in 1978, and they stole the show from Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy. On this box-set you get all their classic songs, and you can marvel at Cheetah Chrome's extraordinary guitar playing - check out the heartbreakingly sad guitar solo on Can't Hurt Me Anymore!!! A must buy, people!!

It's a joy to hear the boys play loud and plastered. Don't be put off by multiple versions of the same songs -- they all rock. It's a walk down memory lane that'll put a giant grin across your face, and make you want to pick up that old guitar again and play along.

Dead Boys - 'All This And More' (Bomp Records) 4 1/2 stars,

A nice to have 2-CD, 35 track compilation of the proto-punk rockers we know as the notorious Dead Boys. Tunes here apparently come from a couple of vintage live gigs that took place at the famous club CBGB's and San Francisco, 1977-78. Sound is lo-fi, but still very good. Just so if you're a true fan of the Dead Boys or just '70's all American punk in general, you should get plenty of enjoyable spins from this pick. So many great tracks here, like "Caught With The Meat In Your Mouth", "What Love Is", the slam-dancing classic "Down In Flames", the Stooge's cover "Search & Destroy", the sluggish title track "All This And More", "Ain't Nothin' To Do", the Sir Douglas Quintet's "Hey Little Girl" (that's one I certainly didn't expect), "Death May Be Your Santa Claus" and so on. Highly recommended.

Great CD, not great CD-quality,
By
This review is from: All This & More (Audio CD)
It's simple...This CD is awesome...The Dead Boys are awesome. Their mixture of raw punk riffs, solid drumming and rauchy lyrics make up a great CD with great song titles(I do wish that "Ain't It Fun" were on this disc). That being said, this CD, as most Dead Boys CDs is not good quality. I guess recording concerts or live performances back in the day just wasn't easy, especially on a low budget. This CD also has many of the same tracks, so that sort of takes away from the overall value of it. All this aside, if you are a fan of early punk bands, you will probably really enjoy this CD.

What can you say - hard hitting, scratchy/crap recording quality - in your face - insanity; What else could you ask for! -- If you don't like this particular genre of music - or at least the period it represents, you won't like this CD - BUT, if you love the energy and angst these guys KRANK up - and the simplistic - intense - earthy - but honest lyrics - and musicianship, heck - it's super GREAT stuff! So - not to get overly wordy - it's a love or hate thing - if you're after slick produced recordings - cool over dubs and neat musicianship, you won't like this - if you want it honest, sweaty and basic - join me in blowing the speakers out in your car - I LOVED IT!

Can't Hear the Deadboys,

This review is from: All This & More (Audio CD)
I was very disappointed with the quality of this cd. The sound is so muffled it's annoying and almost incomprehensible. Do yourself a favor and DON'T buy this cd. The sound is like all those bad videos from CBGB.I'll try again with a different CD like "Young Loud and Snotty" and maybe that will have a better sound. Much of Stiv and the Deadboy's vids on youtube are really poorly recorded and this cd sounds much like that. You can do better!

Don't BUY the Record,
By NATON "ndep22" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews

I WILL MENTION THAT I BOUGHT THE VINYL VERSION OF THIS RELEASE.I NOTICE THAT THE CD VERSION HAS MORE THAN TWICE THOSE SONGS ON THE LP. I WILL SAY THAT THIS LIVE RECORDING IS ANYTHING BUT GOOD. IT'S ACTUALLY TERRIBLE. THE WRITING CAPTIONS ON THE BACK STATE TO THE EFFECT THAT THE SONGS'PRESENTED ON THE LP(ON THE RELEASE)ARE BETTER SONG VERSIONS, THAN THOSE SONGS DONE IN OF THE STUDIO. I TAKE THIS STATEMENT AS FALSE ADVERTISING. THIS RECORD IS A LOW BLOW FROM BOMP RECORDS... |
