As compared to his latest album, Melody Road, which the Neil Diamond groupies are all giving five stars just because it's Neil Diamond, this collection is all legitimately five-star Neil Diamond. These are the original recordings of 23 of his best compiled from different collections/albums, from his early stuff (i.e. Kentucky Woman, Sweet Caroline, Solitary Man), to 70s-80s hits (i.e. Song Sung Blue, Forever in Blue Jeans, America, etc.) The listener can do no better in a compilation of great Neil Diamond than this.

I bought this after buying his latest album based on the rave reviews found on Amazon, and decided that either I was missing something or that the new stuff just isn't all that phenomenal, and that biased reviewers would give ANYTHING Neil Diamond does five stars. Sorry, folks, but that does people a disservice. A five star review should not just be given away because you think an author/singer/celebrity can do nothing wrong or not up to his/her usual standards. It's supposed to help people either unfamiliar with (not too likely with Neil Diamond, who has been around for 40+ years at least) material make an informed decision. Reviews that say simply "It's great!", "It's the best!", etc. not only are not reviews but are simply applause for someone the "author" of a review wouldn't give a bad review to if it were an album of belches and drum beats. These are essential songs for anyone who wants a Neil Diamond collection, and from his Tin Pan Alley days, to his rocking period (Cherry, Cherry, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show) to his African period (Soolaimon), there's something for everyone.

This, then, is an ACTUAL five-star collection that actually deserves the rating.

Pre Ordered this and got it fast...and at a lower price which the difference was refunded promptly. First Greatest Hits album since reuniting with Capital Records so all of these are original studio releases instead of later versions like on other greatest hit albums. If you love the Original Neil Diamond you will LOVE this one!

This is a great compilation of Brother Love's most popular songs, all of which I have enjoyed over a span of some 50 years. There are 23 songs all on one disc. Having been a ND fan throughout the period that these songs covered, it made me happy to see a revival of his music. I had these songs scattered on various other albums, but this CD brings them together for me to enjoy again and again. If you loved Neil Diamond songs, this CD will surely stir memories of some BEAUTIFUL NOISE.

Just what I was looking for. So many Neil Diamond albums have live cuts on them where in mho he tries to put too much into them and it ruins the song. These are all studio cuts, and this album includes most of his popular songs. I'm sure some purists will find something missing, but I'm quite happy with the selections.

No matter at what point in Neil Diamond's career a "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" was issued, it's bound to be a winner. Spanning two decades, the 60s and 70s, this album has 23 of his most popular songs.

Diamond soothes, excites, calms and thrills with his music. Songs ranging from the gospel-like Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show to the almost religious Holly Holy will excite then calm. Soolaimon, Diamond's foray into Swahili and African music, is also a trance-like song. Two of my favorites, Play Me and I Am...I Said add to the introspective songs he writes, plays and sings.

Neil Diamond is a treasure. I cannot think of anybody but perhaps this modern generation who could not find a song here to embrace.

Classic Neil Diamond. Missed a couple of songs I remember from his first 'Greatest Hits' album but definitely worth the price and having in your collection.

This is good for a single disc, but he has way too much good stuff to fit on a single-disc compilation, so the double one is more well-rounded collection at 42 tracks. Even THAT one is missing 23 chart singles but those mostly are just minor ones, but what is included covers most of the bases, and even includes at least 1 song from each of his last 3 albums, even "Melody Road", except his recent covers album "Dreams". Another thing, both collections focus on Neil, the songwriter, so no covers are included like of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"...yet, if there is one song to separate the single from the double, what will determine which one to buy, it is "Longfellow Serenade", one of his finest...what an awesome song!! It's on the double, not the single.

But these collections are tasters for his catalogue if you want to dig deeper, and the Capitiol/UME reissues are just starting to come out at, like, 7 bucks a pop for titles like "The Jazz Singer" and 15 for double albums like "Hot August Night NYC"...but these collections are good enough to be the one Neil title in your collection if can only have one.

There ya go...I used to think he was "my parents' music"...BUT the guy is such a good pop songwriter and craftsman that he has become "everybody's music"...heck, even one of my fave bands, Finnish rockers' HIM, their leader/lead singer/main songwriter, Ville Valo, counts him as one of the greatest artists ever and did a killer version of "Solitary Man" in 2004!! And his newest, "Melody Road" is great stuff, "Alone At The Ball" is an amazing song!!
