Book Description

September 1, 2007
Essence® bestselling author Daaimah S. Poole took readers on a wild, sexy ride with her novel Ex-Girl to the Next Girl. Now in All I Want is Everything we meet a young woman with a hot voice and superstar dreams...

Talented Kendra Michelle Thomas always dreamed of becoming a singing sensation. At high school talent shows, she moved people to tears. Everyone thought she'd be the next Mariah Carey. But between Kendra's father abandoning her mother, her mother's alcoholism, and a tragedy that lands Kendra and her siblings in foster care, there's not much opportunity for making dreams come true. Before Kendra knows it, she's twenty-five-years-old, working as a bartender, and trapped in a relationship of convenience. She knows something's gotta give...

Determined to break into the industry, Kendra takes her small savings and makes a demo. Her gift and personality soon get her a manager, a series of gigs, and finally a recording contract--plus a check fat enough to move her family into a house, and then some. But when a turn of events lands her right back where she started from, she'll have to make a choice: sink back into obscurity--or discover what she's really made of...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Dream Deferred, January 13, 2008
This review is from: All I Want Is Everything (Paperback)
All I Want Is Everything by Daaimah S. Poole is about a young woman named Kendra who is going through the motions of life. She is currently working as a barmaid, a job that is going nowhere fast. When one night some of her former high school classmates come in the bar to celebrate their recent accomplishments, Kendra is forced to face the reality of what her life has become.

Kendra is tired of the life she is living or lack of living and decides to take matters into her own hands. She, with the help of her family, is determined to break into the music industry. After all she has been told time and time again that she has a beautiful voice. So she takes her savings and makes a demo. After singing at a couple of open mic nights, at local clubs, she finds herself with a manager who is willing to take her on as a client. Soon things take off for her. She has a contract with a label, a check, and the opportunity she is looking for. So what can go wrong?

I really enjoyed this book. It gave a different perspective on the music industry and what goes on behind the scenes. It shows that just because you have talent, it does not always mean you will get what you want; that it takes time and determination to make dreams come true. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an unfulfilled dream.
