4.0 out of 5 stars A Dream Deferred, January 13, 2008
This review is from: All I Want Is Everything (Paperback)
All I Want Is Everything by Daaimah S. Poole is about a young woman named Kendra who is going through the motions of life. She is currently working as a barmaid, a job that is going nowhere fast. When one night some of her former high school classmates come in the bar to celebrate their recent accomplishments, Kendra is forced to face the reality of what her life has become.

Kendra is tired of the life she is living or lack of living and decides to take matters into her own hands. She, with the help of her family, is determined to break into the music industry. After all she has been told time and time again that she has a beautiful voice. So she takes her savings and makes a demo. After singing at a couple of open mic nights, at local clubs, she finds herself with a manager who is willing to take her on as a client. Soon things take off for her. She has a contract with a label, a check, and the opportunity she is looking for. So what can go wrong?

I really enjoyed this book. It gave a different perspective on the music industry and what goes on behind the scenes. It shows that just because you have talent, it does not always mean you will get what you want; that it takes time and determination to make dreams come true. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an unfulfilled dream.

3.0 out of 5 stars All I Want Is Everything - 3.5 stars, February 24, 2008

I just finished reading this book & found it to be an excellent quick read. I'm interested in the behind the scenes aspect of the music business and found this book to be very honest in its depiction of a young woman with a "dream deferred" who courageously pursued that lost dream.

The drama surrounding the lead character's family was very realistic as were the descriptive passages about Philly. I loved the storyline regarding Kendra's work to get a debut album off the ground then how she bounced back when everything fell apart.

This is the first book I've read by Daaimah S. Poole and I appreciated the fact that it's not just another "hood saga" - there's no gangsters, guns or over the top thugery. There's just a really uplifting story about a young woman who bravely fought to make her dreams come true and keep her family together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dream to Live & Live the Dream....., December 20, 2007

This review is from: All I Want Is Everything (Paperback)
Kendra learns that to survive you have to dream, but as life goes on, you need a reality check to get you back on track. Her struggles started early and it was not her fault, but unfortunately you can't control what happens when someone else is supposed to be responsible. As she is hit with a shocking realty check when some old classmates walk into her job and ask her what she has been up to and how she was voted most likely to succeed in their class. (Slap- Smack -Whack upside the head)!!!!Kendra then gets the second wind in life to live out her dream...but too much too fast and trying to maintain old habits and relationships along with getting to diva for her own good, brings her back down to a lower spot then when she first started out. The reason why I say a lower spot is because she now has bills that she didn't have before. Trying to go back isn't easy either and Thank God for her brother and a real friend that she met along the way (Beazie) who support her and give her the assistance that she needs and Kendra has learned a valuable lesson, and she has learned from her mistakes. To have to go through something to get something, but you have to learn why you are going through so you don't keep making the same mistakes over and over again. There are some characters that I would have liked to see come back near the end, like Kendra's dad and Lana, along with Tony and Corey, just to get their reaction to the "Kendra Michelle" who is living her dream and living it well. I can see a sequel to this book, because Daaimah Poole has set the scene and do so much with it and can go with so many different characters. John is with Kendra, so what is Nitra doing? Where is Bilal? Good job overall Daaimah!!

4.0 out of 5 stars From the Bottom Up, October 11, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: All I Want Is Everything (Paperback)
"All I want Is Everything" by Daaimah S. Poole is a great read. The story is inspirational and true to life.
Kendra Michelle Thomas had a rough life. Her dad left and her mom became an alcoholic. The only joys she has are her brothers and sisters and her singing.
Kendra is tired of her dead end job and low pay. Kendra's life consists of her boring job and boring man Marcus. Her desire is to sing, so she takes a chance and jumps into the music industry. Unfortunately Kendra finds out all that glitters is not gold. Kendra won't give up until her dreams come true.
