5.0 out of 5 stars A concise work that leaves you amazingly satisfied., April 27, 1998
This review is from: All the Women of the Bible (Hardcover)
Perhaps it is due to the age and place in which I was raised--the 70s and 80s in Europe and Washington DC--or perhaps it is simply who I am, but my interest in the Catholic Church and the Bible itself has had its ups and downs. Whenever my interest in the Church and the Bible was awakened, however, it was due to interest in the writings of the Bible.

Whatever the initial reason that my interest in the Bible was inspired, however, I always read about the same topic: women and, in particular, the heroic women who were respected and revered by their husbands, families, and/or nations. I wanted to find women to emulate.

This book is the best I have read on the subject of women in the Bible. Deen's work remains concise, while she makes you feel as if you know each character as a woman and as a part her place in history. Then, after writing these evocative passages, she has useful appendices such as an alphabetical listing of each woman who is named in the Bible and a brief description of each, a listing of women according to their station in life, a bibliography, and an incredibly in-depth index. This is a book that you will refer to throughout your life, whether you are looking for an interesting story, you want to learn about the age these women lived in, or you simply need inspiration. No matter your need, this book can fulfill it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, just a bit dated, March 22, 2000
This exhaustive work is invaluable to anyone who wants to know the stories of Biblical women better. I'm doing research on Biblical widows, and this book is the most accessibly organized sourced I've found. It was written in 1955, so don't be surprised if it's a bit dated stylistically & theologically. Still, it's valuable as a reference tool that may lead to you to deepened encounter with women of faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Politically correct role of women in biblical times?, April 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: All the Women of the Bible (Hardcover)
One of my sons, when he was about four, ran to the front of me, his mother, on a narrow sidewalk with the statement: "Men are leaders in front; women are leaders behind." This was the politically correct point of view in less enlightened times - especially in biblical times. Or was it? Edith Deen has compiled all the data necessary to answer that question. She has reviewed every woman mentioned in the Bible, those whose names were given, and those who were unnamed. She has pointed out those who were "leaders in front" and those who were "leaders behind."She has also listed them according to their roles in the family: daughters, wives, mothers, widows. There is an excellent index to help you further find them by their roles (e.g, "Warfare, women taking action in"). This is a delightful book, whether you are wanting to discover what roles women played in ancient Israel, or whether you just want a book that has sections that you can read quickly for a short moment's diversion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheds new light on the Bible., May 28, 2000

Women in the bible are often not a topic discussed in church or elsewhere. This book is a wonderful look at the ignored parts of the bible, (and I don't mean every book after Exodus). Women did participate in the bible and this book celebrates their accomplishments and gives them long overdue praise.

5.0 out of 5 stars thorough research on women in the Bible, August 4, 2009
This was written before computers, so the author knew the material intimately as she categorized and collected details. Very reliable source for Bible study.

This book is an excellent reference book for all Christian women who really want to know about women who blazed the trail for us. Not only do you study the women in the Old Testament, but the New Testament as well. This book is used as a textbook in our Church Leadership School. Wonderful gift for a Christian sister. Of all the books cooncerning the women in the bible that I have read, this one is by far the best.

The books came in good condition and arrived sooner than promised. We are using it as a group study, and though it was published years ago the contents do not get outdated, any more than the Bible. It makes these women come alive for us as real people.
