Book Description

X-Wing November 1, 1995
All The World's A Stage

His characters are unforgettable -- Hamlet, Othello, Romeo and Juliet -- their stories resonating with audiences no less today than when Shakespeare first penned them. Now, in this magnificent collection of the bard's greatest speeches. Shakespeare's best-loved scenes some to life in remarkable performances by the world's greatest actors, masterfully preserved by the BBC Archives.

Listen as Lord Laurence Olivier falls under Vivien Leigh's spell as the ill-fated Antony and Cleopatra. Hear Richard Burton's compelling performance as the victorious Henry Vin his stirring St. Crispian Day speech. Thrill to Sir Alec Guinness as King Lear, and Vanessa Redgrave as the rapturous Rosalind in As You Like In Experience Derek Jacobi as Richard II, Sir John Gielgud as the disturbed, melancholy Hamlet, plus a host of other stars appearing in infamous roles, ushering forth memories of Shakespeare's rascally wisdom, fallen men, sweet youth, and mighty Kings.

Tragedy, comedy, passion and relentless cruelty are interwoven in this glorious collection, with works as diverse as Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing. Listeners will revel in this treasure-trove of memorable characters, scenes and prose as, once again, Shakespeare's immortal words prove his brilliant insight into the human heart.

Complete with a special booklet listing the contents of the program.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Shakespeare Anthology There Is, March 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: All the World's a Stage: BBC (X-Wing) (Audio Cassette)
Over the years, I think I've tried every collection of Shakespeares's speeches available and this is by far the best. You have the best Shakepearean actors of all time (Olivier, Burton, etc) doing the greatest scenes. One of the major pluses (overlooked in most audio anthologies) is that the introductions are kept in the notes where they belong. There is no narrator interrupting the poetry with a background on each scene, just a pause. My only quibble (and it is minor) is the sound quality on some of the scenes taped during a stage performance. Also note: the audio cassette edition is complete, the CD is abridged.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to hear many different interpretations, December 19, 2002

I own this on cassette, and hope that it will soon be released on CD.

I play it almost every 3 months or so especially as I search for new audition monologues.
It is a great way to hear various interpretations of speeches, snippets from some of the more less performed plays (Henry VIII and Coriolanus are two examples), and some of the theater's best actors in their finest roles.

Highly recommend
