Book Description

9 and up
Shakespeare's world comes alive in the elaborate pop-up illustrations and fascinating text of this historically accurate portrait of the world's most famous dramatist. All the World's a Stage invites readers to step inside the life of 16th-century England's most luminous playwright and to discover how he got his start in the theater, how he came to London and later escaped the spreading plague, and how he evolved from an actor into the house playwright of the famous Globe Theater. Shakespeare is everywhere these days-from hit movies to best-selling scholarly studies-and this entertaining look at his life offers a perfect way for readers of any age to get better acquainted with the master of the Elizabethan stage.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-A mediocre example of both biography and pop-ups. The text moves chronologically, using the few known details of Shakespeare's life and occasionally embroidering the facts without alerting readers to the difference. An occasional word appears in boldface-an indication, though never stated, that the word is defined at the back of the book. The meager glossary seems random and incomplete, as do many details of this offering. The inside front cover has a very simple map of Stratford with certain sites numbered-but there is no key. The pop-up illustrations are disappointing, vague, and confusing. Flaps picturing Shakespeare's characters give names but not their plays and are not grouped with any logical connection. There's no example of ingenious paper engineering-most are just flaps and foldouts. Even the Globe is just a two-flap foldout. A haphazard product.

This review is from: All the World's a Stage (Hardcover)
My 6th grade theater class was completely mesmerized by this book. It brought to life all of the questions they had about some of the origins of theater. Thank you so much!
