Book Description

April 29, 2002
Diana Foxton is the Toast of New York. She's rich, British and beautiful, with a designer wardrobe to die for. Recently married to the head of a publishing empire, she fills her days with shopping, gossiping, and hosting the hottest parties in town.

But when she discovers her husband is having an affair, her glamorous bubble bursts. She suddenly finds herself without any money or job skills, shunned by the glittering society she once ruled. On her own for the first time, she takes the only job she can get, exchanges her Manolo Blahniks for Payless, and tries to settle into the life of a woman who does her own laundry, buys her own groceries, and takes the bus. Along the way, she discovers that her handsome new boss might be interested in more than her pretty face, and that she just might make it on her own.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sex in the morning, sex with tea and sex in the evening it's always well-scrubbed, perfumed and always engaged in at the snobbiest addresses, by beautiful people wearing Calvin Klein and Victoria's Secret skivvies beneath their glitzy couturier labels. This American debut by the author of four erotic bestsellers in the U.K. serves fair warning that there's a new sexy romance queen panting at the gates, with one difference: Bagshawe doesn't try to sugarcoat her characters' ruthless, selfish or venal behavior, giving her story a witty edge. Silly but rich British heiress Diana Verity marries a ruthless U.K. commoner and publishing enfant terrible, Ernie Foxton, dreaming of the adventure of moving to New York as the hostess with the mostest befitting her hubby's newfound position as CEO of the Blakely's publishing empire. Founder of Green Eggs Books, Michael Cicero is a chauvinistic, womanizing self-made publisher whose classic children's books, formerly out-of-print, are flying off the shelves. Finding her husband in bed with an Oriental dominatrix in her own bedroom, Diana walks out on him, only to be skewered in a vicious divorce. Michael also becomes a victim when he makes a deal with Foxton, who misleads him into thinking he is entering into a partnership. The wronged duo join up to deal in electronic games and after a few setbacks, lots of shopping and name dropping, and plenty of explicit, devilishly prurient sex manage to get back on their feet (pun intended). Designing Women meets The Wife of Bath's Tale in this blithely erotic name-dropping romp through Tiffany's, Cartier and an entire Yellow Pages of designer showrooms and posh eateries. (Apr.)Forecast: With a bit more push and flashier packaging (perhaps in paperback?), this title could hit the big time Jackie Collins, watch out!

From Booklist

Bagshawe, a Briton who published her first novel at age 22, now unleashes her talents on this side of the Atlantic. We meet lovely, wealthy, and ultrasnobby British trophy wife Diana Foxton, whose days in New York City (where she has moved with her fabulously wealthy husband) are filled with shopping, gossiping, and hosting exclusive parties. Diana's seemingly perfect world is soon shattered when she discovers that her slimy eel of a husband is having an affair and, what's more, that he plans to throw her out without a penny. On her own for the first time and forced to take an entry-level clerical job, Diana begins her difficult new life while also embarking on a steamy affair with her studly working-class boss. Sexual liberation and self-empowerment soon follow, and readers won't be too surprised when our chastened heroine is ultimately restored to her previous illustrious station. Like Judith Krantz, Bagshawe packs her novel with lurid sexual details, and it comes complete with a fairy-tale ending. Librarians should stock up; it will be popular. Kathleen Hughes

4.0 out of 5 stars entertaining relationship drama, May 12, 2002
This review is from: For All the Wrong Reasons: A Novel (Hardcover)
In London wealthy heiress Diana Verity marries publisher Ernie Foxton, though he has an underhanded reputation within the industry and amidst the ladies. To Ernie, Diana is the perfect trophy wife when he relocates to New York to take over Blakeley's Publishing House and turn it into a global giant. To Diana, Ernie is her ticket to an exciting youthful world as a major Big Apple hostess.

In Brooklyn, Michael Cicero is making a success out of Green Eggs Books by reissuing out of print classic children's stories. However, Ernie wants control of Green Eggs and ruthlessly succeeds in his endeavor. At the same time, Diana catches Ernie in their bed in an S & M relationship with his mistress. Ernie destroys Diana in the subsequent divorce leading to her friends dropping her like she is contagious. This leads to Michael and Diana forming a partnership whose prime objective is to decapitate Ernie, but grows into something much more positive between them.

FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS is an entertaining relationship drama that focuses on the lifestyles of the rich and famous. The key to the tale that makes Louise Bagshawe's novel different is that the author leaves no doubt that the residents of the world of glitter contain character flaws, some very ugly. Though how much shopping can ornaments do will leave even shopaholics tired though the story line will prove fun for fans of Jackie Collins' HOLLYWOOD WIVES.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, 'Can't put it down for a second' Summer Read., May 30, 2002

This review is from: For All the Wrong Reasons: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book was one of those wonderful books that upset you when it is over because you must say goodbye to the characters. At first I was sure the herione was pure fluff, but the growth and integrity she exhibits made it so enjoyable, I defy anyone not to respect her courage by the end of the book. Very empowering to women, yet Bagshawe is ruthless about her character's flaws. The hero, 'Micheal' is enough to make any woman gasp and pant a little even though at times she wants to throttle him. It is a rip roaring ride! Where can we get more of her books?

Louise did a wonderful job writing this book. She made you start out really wishing something awful would happen to the main character based on snobbiness and egotistical ways. When it did, she transformed the character from a princess to a pauper back to a princess again, all the while making you fall in love with Diane even though you were just wishing that she would fall from grace. Throw in the typical guy to make opposites attract and you have the makings for a great story. The only downside was that I felt the story ended too abruptly. I wouldn't have minded if the author would have even done an epilogue.
