5.0 out of 5 stars Janet's Best and Most Personal Cd Yet !!!, May 10, 2001
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
I bought my favorite singer's new cd being a long-time fan of hers. My favorite cd of hers was tied between Rhythmn Nation and Janet and my least favorite was The Velevet Rope. But in my eyes she can do no wrong and with this cd she gives us everything we wanted and more. Her songs are great, catchy and extremely personal in some. The lyrics are often harsh, fresh and real - something none of the Jackson's seem to be able to give us. This cd seems to live up to its title - All For You - being exactly what long time Janet fans want: Great music and Personal lyrics. So, here is my opinion about each of the songs that appear on All For You:

#1. Intro - Just one of her many "Interesting" interludes

#2. You Ain't Right - I didn't like this song at all when I first heard it and it has grown on me ALOT. The chorus seems annoying the first few listens, but after a while it becomes a very fun song and a great start to an amazing album. 09/10

#3. All For You - I loved this song the first time I heard it and I still do. Its Janet at her best. Breezy, Catchy, Fun and very enjoyable. Very much like Escapade. Although, I like the Video Mix on her cd single better that plays like her video, this song is very cool. 10/10

#4. 2WayForYou (interlude)

#5. Come On Get Up - This was instantly one of my favorite songs on the album. Very good and makes you wanna get up and dance. I hope this is one of her singles 'cause I would love to see a video for this. 10/10

#6. When We OOOO - This song is very trance-like and reminds me alot of That's The Way Love Goes. It's just sexy and sweet and very mellow. It's not mt favorite, but its good and catchy. I like the music that goes with it. 07/10

#7. China Love - I really did not like this song the first time I heard it. It starts out great and then I lost it. But now I have grown to like it. I really like Janet's voice on this. It's very sexy and sweet sounding. And I love the China sounding music that plays behind her voice. 07/10

#8. Love Scene (ooh baby) - I could do without this song. It's not bad, but it's very predictable and sounds like alot of her other songs. Rain plays in the background and if you remember Anytime, Anyplace then you already know this song. 05/10

#9. Would You Mind - Since this cd did not come with a warning label on it (which it should), I will warn you all that this song is VERY pornographic and is full of sounds, moans and language. However, it is a great song and very catchy. And the ending is funny. 08/10

#10. LAME (interlude)

#11. Trust A Try - This Song ROCKS!!! This is my favorite song on the cd and I hope that there is a video for it. This song is very angry. Very Black Cat and it's lyrics express so many emotions. The music that goes with the song is AWESOME and I can see this being one of her bigger hits. If you want to know why you should buy this cd, this song is the reason why. 10/10

#12. Clouds (interlude)

#13. Son Of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You) - I thought this song was sooooo weird when I first heard it. Carly Simon's deep voice and Janet's sweet sounding voice make for a very odd pairing, but after getting use to it, it has become my one of my faves. It grows on you and the lyrics are extremely catchy and hard. I wouldn't wanna mess with Carly or Janet! And they have successfully sampled one of Carly's songs to give both of them a very original classic. 10/10

#14. Truth - This song is my second favorite on her cd. It is so personal and touching and her voice has never ever sounded so better and more soulful in her career. This song feels like a gift when you listen to it. Like you are getting into Janet's head and her heart. Songs this good is rare. 10/10

#15. Theory (interlude)

#16. Someone To Call My Lover - This is another great song that would make a great video. An acoustic guitar and bass filled beats have never gone together so well before. This is another fun, care-free song that makes a great dance song and makes you wanna get up and dance. 09/10

#17. Feels So Right - This song is another I could live without. In fact, I don't even remember most of it, but since I am listening to the cd right now, I can honestly say that I could take it or leave it. It's fairly catchy and that's about it. 06/10

#18. Doesn't Really Matter - This song is one of my favorite songs she's EVER sung. It's so catchy and filled with funky beats that make you wanna do every thing you always wanna do when you think of Janet. If her career could be summed up in one song, this would be it. It's a classic and unlike All For You they have made this version into the video mix which makes it sound just like the video which makes it a hundred times more awesome. 10/10

#19. Better Days - A very good and uplifting song to end this cd. I have noticed that this is one of the only Janet Jackson cds that doesn't end with the sounds of rain. Instead, this cd ends with a beautiful symphony that plays out like the clouds are finally separating. That seems like an amazing triumph to me and can't wait to see what Janet does next. 09/10

#20. OUTRO - Janet Being A Sweetheart.....

5.0 out of 5 stars must have, July 10, 2001
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
1. Intro: this is just janet having fun. 2. You ain't right: good song but not the best.

3. All For You: great song, 1st single. It's extended so you can listen to it a lot longer.

4. 2wayforyou: its kind of confusing at what shes actually saying on this interlude. 5. Come on Get up: its an upbeat song you can dance to.

6. When we Oooo: great romantic song. the beat is slow and almost nonexistent at the begining but a little later it comes in perfect with the song.

7. China Love: As soon as I heard the song, I liked it. Her voice is echoed as she ends a verse.

8. Love Scene: Excellent song. Janet starts to become more, what can I say...out there with this song. But nothing compares to "Would you mind".

9. Would You Mind: the song that has the most controvesy. This song is like "Rope Burn" but to the next step and more explicit. As the song goes on she gets more and more into the song until she gets to the "Lame" interlude. 10. Lame: The interlude goes with "Would you mind".

11. Trust a Try: this is the rock song. The verses she sings sound like a woman scorned and her voice is rough and then she does the hook and she sounds smooth and calm.

12. Clouds: this is the interlude with Carly Simon 13. Son of a Gun: Carly Simon is also in this song singing and talking. This song has a nice beat. Janet sounds mad in this song which makes it a great song.

14. Truth: This is an amazing slow song. 15. Theory: She just talks a little on this interlude.

16. Someone To Call My Lover: This song reminds me of Jordan Knight's song "Give it 2 u" where the beat is slow during the versus and fast during the chorus. And of course Janet looks hot in the video.

17. Feels so Right: It's not the best but its great.

18. Doesn't Really Matter: This is not the exact version you hear on the soundtrack. This version combines the video version with a couple of remixes off the single and a little extra at the beginning.

19. Better Days: A sad but amazing slow song that has a good message at the end. 20. Outro: A good way to end a great cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss-J keeping it real..a little to real for some., May 5, 2001

This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
It's Perfectly understandable that some that never heard a janet CD before, especially parents, Might be a little shocked when they hear a couple of the songs. More specifically "Would You Mind" this one you might not want the kiddies to hear. Other than that there is nothing overly shocking about the album at all. Funny thing is this isn't the first time she has cussed on an album she's done it on her last 2. The song in which she does cuss more than a couple times is "Son of a Gun".. But It fits with in the song. It's not like she's talking about trees growing and then just starts saying F this and F That. People should Listen to what she's talking about and Not just the F word.Bottom Line is this is an Excellent CD. With some great tracks..The Amazing "Trust A Try" The oh so wonderful "Someone to call My Lover"..The Seductive "When We Oooo" And of course the Edgy and funky "Son of a Gun". If you can get past some of the language and some of the sex and just listen to the album you should be very pleased as i was.The thing that upsets me a little when i see some people complaining about the language and sex is this isn't the first time she's done either. she's been moaning and groaning on her albums since "control" and as i said she has cussed before. Why some that know her work act so shocked now i have no idea. just take a listen to '93's "IF" where she talks about Oral sex. And for you parents that bought the album because you liked the title track maybe you should listen more carefully. she is saying .... And believe me your kids are hearing allot worse things at school and from their friends then just janet moaning andsaying the F word. Bottom line Excellent CD. Keep it Up Janet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth it!, August 18, 2001
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
"All for you" demonstrates why Janet is still around, simly because her music is 100% quality. Unlike other artist she will not cheat us (her fans) with easy, fast, friendly pop songs; no! She goes to the studio, takes her time (usually between 3 to 4 years on every new project) and comes out with her newest invention, in this case her "All for you" album. The intro that starts the cd is very fresh, very Janet, (different from the ones before, but equally interesting), we then are invited to join the fun with "You ain't right" very electronic dance track, to then listen to the PERFECT pop title track, and we complete the set with "Come on get up" to that moment we have danced to at least 15 minutes of cool, new sounds of Ms. Jackson, then you relax and enjoy (seriously the next track is sooooo cool!) "When we oooo" and the beat in the track is very contagious (a classic for you "That's the way love goes" lovers) the slow jam continues with "China love" very instrumental, the intro for the song is very pure and she sounds very crystal clear. Now a parenthesis on the program the next song "Love scene" is kind of humm ok I guess (lest push skip on the remote), we are now on track 9 and prepare for total exctassy, here we get a daring Janet, daring to push the limits, and she pretty much goes all the way in the love making art, but don't freak out she does it with class and passion, now that you've come so far on the cd, get up again and we are on the third set, my favorite track "Trust a try" makes you turn up the volume and enjoy classic orchestra intro to dance contagious chorus, and here's where the DIVA joins talents with Carly Simon "Son of a gun", (unlike many say) I think it's a very interesting song, (a favorite for the "Nasty" lovers) they do a great job and tell it like it is, the next track "Truth" is vulnerable Janet, a great song, story of her life kindda song, and after another interlude (so far we've heard 4) we get to her newest single "Someone to call my lover" very simple lyrics, Janet letting us know that she hopes to find love again, contagious rythm, and yes for the next song she does jazzy tunes, yep! "Feels so right" great song, clear music, catchy chorus, and then a flashback to last year's #1 "Doesn't really matter" with new arrangements. Now we're almost done when we hear "Better days" a positive song, honest message on hoping for better days to come and then the "Outro". And you go back to play it again, because you loved it! It's not cheap, it's not a rushing cd, she has not lost anything if anything she's still treating us to her best music to date.

3.0 out of 5 stars All For Me? Not really, just some, not all, May 28, 2002
By
Leon (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
"All For You" is Janet's first album release since 1997's "The Velvet Rope" which featured some amazing songs. "All For You" is slightly disappointing, well, in my opinion anyway. There's a total of 20 tracks of which 6 are interludes. Therefore, technically speaking, there's a grand total of 14 songs altogether. "Doesn't Really Matter" which was featured in the movie of which Janet also starred in "The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" is included here which is great. Her other singles including the title track, "Someone To Call My Lover" & "Son Of A Gun" are all here. However, once we lift off the single releases, there ain't that many songs left that are pleasantly enjoyable. Well, besides "Come On Get Up" & "Feels So Right", the rest are bearable or downright disappointing.

For starters, there are far too many sex talk with four tracks filled with sexually explicit lyrics in the form of "Would You Mind", "China Love", "When We Ooo" & "Love Scene (Ooh Baby)". I seriously believe the inclusion of these four tracks are downright unnecessary & inappropriate for some of Janet's younger fans.

"Truth" is an honest song about Janet's current being and how she feels about life. "Better Days" is an uplifting & positive ballad but could have passed us by without the foul language. The remaining two tracks "You Ain't Right" & "Trust A Try" could have fitted in "The Velvet Rope" and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference because it's so similar to the songs from that album.

On the whole, the album is average. Could have been much better considering Janet dwelled on this album for four years. There's 6 or so great tracks to enjoy but on the whole, you're buying the album for 10 tracks or so though there's actually 20 tracks on the album. Hopefully, Janet would come back with a stronger and more pleasant album in another four years or so.

Also, if you're accustomed to listening to the radio edit or radio versions of the singles, you might find the album versions slightly tedious as some tracks last up to a whole minute longer than the radio edit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Since when did swearing become an artform on a Janet album?, April 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Janet's since "Control", and knew she reached her artistic peak with "The Velvet Rope". "All For You" on the other hand shows that she has reached an all time low with her music.

My main problem is with the cursing in her lyrics. I mean it's one thing if you do it in public, but her lyrics are meant to be personal when listening. I felt she was deliberatley trying to be shocking, and looked rather foolish. This should have been slapped with a "Parental Advisory Warning" since these days she is attracting a pre-teen audience.

Another problem with the album was Janet's "sex-kitten" obsession. It's getting repetitve and boring, she's been doing that for the last 3 albums for crying out loud. Even Madonna knew that it was time to move on after 93, and she's done much better since then. Tracks like "Would You Mind", "Love Scene (ooh baby)", and "When We Oooo" are just trashy lyrics that are just beneath her. It's one thing to write sensual, exotic lyrics, but lyrics that are on par with Lil' Kim are just not amusing.

My third problem with the album is that musically, it's boring. Her long-time producers have officially lost it with Janet. Most of the songs suffer from generic R&B that acts like TLC and Destiny's Child would sing to. Such examples are "All For You", "Someone to Call My Lover" (so TRL-oriented, it's sickening), "Feels So Right", and "Doesn't Really Matter".

There are only a few good tracks here. The electronic-orchestral "Trust a Try". The sensual Asian-themed "China Love". The lyrically-lovely ballad "Truth". And the disco, drum and bass mixed "Come On Get Up". The Carly Simon duet on "Son of a Gun" wasn't pleasing and was just riding on the coattails of the wonderful Joni Mitchell-inspired "Got Til It's Gone".

Other problems include the interludes (they aren't getting any better, though they were never good to begin with) and that album runs way too long at 73 minutes.

Seems like Janet is trying too hard these days to win our attention. So is this album "All For You"? If you happen to like all the things I just denouced, then I guess Janet was right in the album's name.

3.0 out of 5 stars Janet fan from North Carolina, May 4, 2001

This CD is typical of Janet, but I must admit that I was a little surprised with the language, however, she speaks her mind and she is definately not shy about expressing herself. If you are not interested in adult themes, don't buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Filler For You, July 20, 2002
By
"fordpony90" (Columbus, OH United States) - See all my reviews
Alright, I absolutely adore and love Ms. Jackson. I have been a fan from the start, well, since "Control." With every album, there has been some sort of progression (a positive one), in which Janet grows as a songwriter/artist. Although she's always been 2 or 3 steps behind Madonna, she is usually ahead of the rest of the crowd. "The Velvet Rope" being proof of that. To me, that is a stunning piece of art that Janet will, in all likelihood, be unable to match or top. So, I kept my expectations somewhat low when "All For You" came out, but still, I found myself sorely disappointed with this release.

From the ridiculously contrived opener, to the cheesy dance beats of "Come on Get Up," to the inane lyrics of "Someone to Call My Lover," this album leaves a rather bitter taste in my mouth. She is desperately trying to recapture her sales of "janet." with this release, in which she feels the need to compete with the likes of Britney and Mya.

There are so many negatives involved with this release, that I need to letter them in order to collect my thoughts.

A) The interludes are rather indulgent and wasteful. I understand that Jimmy and Terry thought a behind the scenes look would give a nice feel to the album, but in reality, it chops the album into bits. The flow is not there.

B) The sampling is ridiculous. Jimmy and Terry are beyond TIRED and DRY! The moment they felt the need to work with Mariah, Janet should've went running for something more experimental (ala Basement Jaxx, who has shown an interest in her). Instead, they provide her with lazy sampling (mainly AFY, STCML, and above all, SOAG), and even worse lyrics (i.e., The way your body moves/It drives me damn baby/Now what I wanna see/Is you shake that [butt] for me).

C. The sexuality is ridiculously pushed on this album. There is nothing wrong with expressing one's sexuality, but when it is presented in such a contrived manner, it is hard to do anything but yawn at such useless material. Although I will admit, myself and my friends had a few good laughs over "Would You Mind." Basically, Janet is a parody of herself on such tracks.

D) There is one stand out track on this album: Trust a Try. The production is beyond fabulous (Jimmy and Terry have their few, but far between, moments). The vocals are amazing, even though the lyrical booklet provided is absolutely essential in understanding the lyrics. So, I did present one positive.

E) But other than TAT, the rest screams filler. Particularly "Come on Get Up" (cheesy dance track), "Feels So Right" (a Mya throwaway track), "Doesn't Really Matter" (the remixed version, which undermines the freshness of the original), "Would You Mind" (sleeper track), and "Someone to Call My Lover" (this track provides the most inane lyrics of the album...quite a feat).

All in all, I would be impressed if Mya or Britney had come out with such an album, but not from a seasoned performer/artist like Janet. Let this be known as Janet's sellout album.

If you're seeking for one of the better, if not best, R&B albums of 2001, look no further than Aaliyah's "Aaliyah." That is the album Janet should've made.

3.0 out of 5 stars Parents be warned!! EXPLICIT language!!, May 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
Personally for myself, I loved the album. Many songs that are great to dance to. I bought the album because my daughters loved the song" All for you". Anyhow, I was shocked when I read the lyrics to at least 3 songs.. and WOW!! Janet you should had got a Sexually explicit stickers on the front of the cd. There was some swearing words also. Normally, I'm not a prude, but as a parent, I was very concerned, since a lot of Janet's fans are young children. I even saw the cd sold at Toys R Us. Parents, if you want to hear the cd, read the lyrics before letting your children hear it. Be your own judge and decide which songs, your children should be hearing. I only let my daughters listen to it, when I have control of the cd player in the car, and I skip the naughty 3 or 4 songs. A VERY CONCERNED PARENT!! Hope this helps all parents!!

5.0 out of 5 stars You're damned if you do, damned if you don't......., May 9, 2001

"mochalatte" (Brooklyn, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
I'm all for freedom of speech, but what's with the steady whining about the lyrical content of this album? You'd think it was Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera crooning in your ear. For those that haven't noticed, Janet Jackson is a soon-to-be-35-year-old woman that is mature and adult enough to sing about whatever she pleases. And if history holds true, no one should be surprised that "All For You" is celebration of sex and the newly single diva. "All For You" is truly a welcome addition to Miss Jackson's illustrious discography and demonstrates why she is the reigning Queen of Pop/R&B. From the dance floor stompers like "Come On Get Up" and the CD's #1 title track to the molasses-rich slow jams such as "When We Oooo," "China Love" and "Would You Mind," it's all vintage JJ material. With hip-hop wiz Rockwilder added behind the boards to the already legendary duo of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, they mix an eclectic brew of potential hits. "Son Of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)" brims with middle-finger sass. Janet and guest collaborator Carly Simon's attitude is letter perfect and stands out as one of the CD's standout tracks. Also recommended is the innovative rock opera of "Trust A Try" and the lushly orchastrated closer "Better Days." It's really ironic that when her last opus, "The Velvet Rope" was released 4 years ago, it caught everyone off guard. It was criticized for being too dark, too weird, too deep for the mainstream public's tastes. Now Janet returns to her roots with a fun, carefree album and people still aren't satisfied. But, everyone can't be pleased. Fortunately, I am and as long as Janet Jackson is making music, I always will be. Bottom line, get the album. It's the Queen of Pop doing what she does best.
