DVD is worth the price of this special edition...,
By
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
As a longtime (and somewhat obsessive) janet fan, it's easy to quibble and complain about the alterations and omissions found on the ALL FOR YOU limited edition cd/dvd. First off, the ALL FOR YOU cd included in this set is not the original album that was shipped to stores earlier this year, but is a cleaned up and "sex-free" version. Any curse words or talk of explicit sexuality is censored. Additionally, the track WOULD YOU MIND is painfully removed from the tracklist. In its place are two mediocre remixes of SON OF A GUN, featuring Missy Elliot and P. Diddy. Personally speaking, SON OF A GUN is perhaps the worst song on this otherwise enjoyable album, so it baffled me as to why the producers wanted to include three mixes of this song. If they wanted to replace the explicit WOULD YOU MIND, they could've taken the upbeat WHO (found on the ALL FOR YOU Japanese import cd) and put it on this cd. If you're looking for good remixes of SON OF A GUN (and there are some good remixes), you won't find them on this cd. Wait for the Dec. 4th release of the European import. It will contain two much more edgier sounding mixes from ROCKWILDER and ROUTE 80, as well as a smooth, afterhours-club-feel from COTTONBELLY. The pre-existing FLYTE TYME mix and the P.DIDDY mix will also be on the import single. Surprisingly, I don't have much to complain about with the dvd. Being that this was the reason I purchased the special edition in the first place, I must say that this is worth the price of the set alone. The dvd is aptly (and somewhat ironically) titled THE VIRGIN YEARS. It contains most of the sex charged videos Janet has made under the Virgin Records label, spanning from JANET to ALL FOR YOU. Also included are three behind-the-scenes clips of Janet's photo shoots and interviews, in which she takes some time out to reveal her thoughts and ideas behind each album. The dvd has a cool function that allows you to mix up the videos and play them in a continuous order of your choice. Now here's where my little complaints come in, but they're minimal: Another note: Some of the videos here are alternate versions of the originals that aired on tv. The THAT'S THE WAY LOVE GOES video doesn't start and end with Janet and the gang goofing around in the apartment, but instead dives right into the song. The IF video keeps the original beginning and ending (outside an Asian style night club), but edits out the voyeuristic "webcam" style setting that made it so interesting in the first place. The AGAIN video included on this disc is interspersed with clips from Janet's 1993 film POETIC JUSTICE. Still, these observations are little to rant about unless you're a die hard Janet fan. It is finally nice to have a collection of her videos on dvd, and by next month, the videos from CONTROL and RHYTHM NATION will also be released onto discs as well. Bottom Line: BUY THIS TWO DISC SET FOR THE DVD, BUT KEEP THE ORIGINAL ALL FOR YOU ALBUM THAT YOU BOUGHT BACK IN APRIL NEARBY.

What most sources don't tell the customer is that this CD comes with a DVD of all of JJ's videos from the last three CD's (janet., Velvet Rope, and All For You (a.k.a. The Virgin Years)). This is a great CD, but it is edited, and Would You Mind is off the track listing. But in place of those are remixes of Son of a Gun, which are decent (the original is the best). The part of this collection that makes it worth the money is the DVD. It's Great! Most people have been waiting for JJ's videos in one place for a long time, and this is the closest anyone will most likely get for a while, and at the moment, it's close enough. Just being able to see the "if" full-length video was nice, but then the other 18 videos make it a complete collection (obviously excluding the video's from the 80's). If you're a fan, or just like Janet, then this is a wonderful purchase.

Top of her Game,

This is a must have collection for any pop music fan... This disc has a little something for everyone. The upbeat tracks are some of the best that Janet has ever produced, and the slower sensual songs make her masterpiece 1993 album 'janet.' look tame. Janet's a full grown woman and lets us all know it. The only flaws in this collection are the edits over all the expletive words (found in the tracks, "Son of a Gun," "Trust a Try," and "Better Days") and the complete exclusion of "Would You Mind" (which is definitely worth picking up on the original release of this album). So you are asking yourself, why buy this edition of the disc if its edited? Because with this one you get what I consider to be the greatest music video DVD compilation ever released. This has all of Janet's best videos... "That's the Way Love Goes" (featuring the Jennifer Lopez cameo), "Again," "Anytime, Anyplace," "You Want This," "All For You," "I Get Lonely," and many more great Janet videos. The only noticeable exclusions from the DVD are "Runaway" and "Twenty Foreplay" which are both A&M releases (not Virgin, like this collection), "Scream" (which was a Sony release, and available on Michael's HIStory DVD), and "Doesn't Really Matter" (which includes clips from the Nutty Professor II: The Klumps film, so for legal reasons could not be included, but can be found on the Nutty Professor DVD). Still, barring the missing videos, this collection is unparalleled. Madonna's 90's video collection, while impressive in its own right, can't even touch this collection. And let us not forget... if you still aren't convinced of buying this collection, I have 3 words for you: "If" music video. Many would say that this music video singlehandedly changed the face of MTV, as the entire video is a dance sequence. Yes, before "If" came along many videos had some awesome dancing, but with the exception of Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted," no video prior to this took it to this level. Directed by Dominic Sena (who directed the feature film "Gone in 60 Seconds with Angelina Jolie and Nicholas Cage, and numerous other Janet videos like "Rhythm Nation"), the "If" video is the definition of what a music video should be. You will get your money's worth.

I am very pleased...,

First off I wanted Son Of a Gun remixes. But I didn't want to spend (the mondy) for a cd single. And I noticed on her newer version of just All For You had the bonus track BUT I didn't want to spend (the money) for an album that I already owned just for one song. So instead this DVD package came out (...). Well hey, I get the SoaG remixes along with a collection of videos on DVD...you can't go wrong if you're a Janet fan.I am very pleased that I spent the money on what I did. Granted it is the clean version but that's cool. She cannot please everyone. Her and Virgin are blasted first because she used profanity and now by fans because she and Virgin took them out for this collection!! For anyone who is a music lover, a DVD buyer and a definite Janet Jackson fan (or even Jacksons)...I recommend it. ::please note that the videos doesn't include the A&M videos...for that try Design of a Decade on DVD-which was released not to long ago)

Limited Edition,
By
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
This is a Special Limited Edition of Janet's ALL FOR YOU CD. It contains the original CD, with a few changes, and a DVD featuring all of her videos during the Virgin years so far. The CD has 21 tracks, which features two bonus tracks, Son of a Gun (Original Flyte Tyme Remix) and Son of a Gun (P. Diddy Remix), which both feature Missy Elliott. However in order to fit these bonus tracks in, they omitted Would You Mind from the CD, so if you own the original version of ALL FOR YOU it would be smart to keep it, as Would You Mind isn't on here, or you could buy the re-released CD that comes without the DVD. The DVD features all of her major videos between 1993-2001. A few were omitted, because they were on other labels (for example Doesnt Really Matter was on Def Jam, so its not on here). That's The Way Love Goes, If, Again, Because of Love, Any Time, Any PKlace, You Want THis, Got Til Its Gone, Together Again (original and deeper remix), I Get Lonely, Go Deep, Every Time, All For You, Someone To Call My Lover, behind the scenes footage for each album, and All For You Love at MTV Icon. A pretty good deal and well worth the money, fans will want to have these videos! Overall a good buy, and worth the investment if this is what you're looking for!

This Really Is "All For You",
By
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
How this release escaped me, is a surprise. Being an avid DVD collector, none of my favorite web sites listed this limited edition as a DVD release, which is the primary reason to buy this limited edition CD/DVD combo.Video quality is excellent, sporting a dual layer, very high bit rate video transfer. Audio is linear PCM, no Dolby Digital compression here, and you CAN tell the difference! The sound matches the picture quality. Incredible! Songs include: That's The Way Love Goes, If, Again, Because of Love, Any Time, Any Place, You Want This (Colorized Version), Janet Behind the Scenes, Got Til It's Gone, Together Again, Together Again (Deeper Remix), I Get Lonely, Go Deep, You, Every Time, Velvet Rope Behind The Scenes, All For You, Someone To Call My Lover, All For You Behind The Scenes, MTV Icon Performance of All For You. Notebly missing is Doesn't Really Matter. You'll have to pick that up on the Nutty Professor II DVD. A very cool feature mentioned in another review here is the Playlist. You pick the songs from the menu, and the DVD plays them in that order!!! Into upbeat Janet? Just pick your tunes. Into that "quiet storm" thing, then pick 'em slow and smooth. Why other music DVDs haven't used this menu technology is anyone's quess. Into avoiding those annoying commentaries between songs..gone...just use the playlist and it's wall to wall music, with none of the "filler". If this truly is a "limited edition", then do that "one click" thing and buy it before it's not available. Really, really nice combo set. Highly recommended. And for that person who has every DVD in the world (like me), I'll bet that they don't even know this release exists. Shame on Virgin Records for not promoting it more. But what a surprise for the DVD fan who thinks they have it all.

Almost All For You,
By Jesse (olympia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All for You (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful re-release of an excellent, fun album. The audio disc contains two remixes of "Son of A Gun", the Missy one & the P. Diddy one. But excluded from this clean version of the album is the best sensual song, "Would You Mind", which is more exciting than either "China Love" or "Love Scene." The J.D. remix of "Someone to Call My Lover" would have been a nice addition to this collection. But the real reason to purchase this album is the DVD. Packed full of Janet's videos from her years with Virgin, all the videos are included, with exception of Doesn't Really Matter, which is sorely missed. However, the rest of the videos make up for it. The energy of "You Want This" is a highlight of all the videos. This is perfect for any Janet fan, I advise to buy it, even if some of the stuff is left off.

,,Got a nice package allright",

The same thing that Jackson did with her 1993 album Janet, she does again with her All for you album: Putting it out again with an extra disc. However, the tracklisting to the regular All for you album has slightly changed. The controversial 'Would you mind' (withdrawn in Singapore) does not appear on this album, and the beautiful 'Son of a gun' is censored. Added are two 'Son of a gun' remixes at the end of the album. The album is still definitely worth hearing. What makes this "nice package allright", as she sings in the title track, is the second disc, a dvd, entitled 'Janet - the virgin years'. Her best videos since she signed to the Branson-label in 1993 are on this disc. From 'That's the way love goes' to her highly acclaimed performance of 'All for you' on MTV's icon, it's all here. Plus this disc features some exclusive behind the scenes-material. And finally you get to see the 'Together Again deeper video', which wasn't commercially available before. This package is absolutely worth the money. However, if you do miss 'Would you mind', you have to get your hands on the original version.

Anyone who knows me knows of my love for Miss JJ. Having cancelled her European Tour, I travelled to Sunrise, FL to see her, & in order to embrace this CD/DVD with open arms, I purchased a multi-region DVD Player so that i could watch all JJs Virgin videos in digital quality, since no plans have been amde to release it in the UK. Okay, so I already have 5 copies of All For You, but this one is different asides from containing an exciting taster of JJ's last 8 years worth of visual performance on the DVD. Differing from the original format of the AFY album, the cd contains new remixes of JJ's Carly Simon rework, Son Of A Gun (featuring supa dupa Missy Elliott), giving the song extra edge, & omits one of my fave songs, Would You Mind. It's surprising this song was removed given that it is one of the talking points of her AFY Tour where JJ straps a young gentleman to a gurny & proceeds to caress him while singing the sultry, 'baby-making' ballad. Nevertheless, it still contains the classic singles, plus most notably a Rok-Opera type track called Trust A Try, (perhaps my fave ever JJ song, which was amazing live! & struts along in the same heavy-rock laden type way as 'If' or 'Black Cat'). The DVD could legitimately have been released as a stand-alone product & sold loads. Its inclusion here as a special DVD illustrates the quality of products that JJ releases for her fans. One watch of Grammy Winning Got Til Its Gone, Together Again, the never-before-released Because of Love, & more recent videos such as AFY & an MTV Icon performance of the same song, along with 3 interviews (each one pertaining to each of JJ's 3 albums under the Virgin label) gives an historic insight into the meaning behind each of JJ's musical odysseys & legacies, & gives the more serious fan greater insight into their idol's life & thoughts. Add to this a super-sexy alternative sleeve, with pictures from the current tour program, you have here an exceptional Tour momento/chronicle of the past 8 years of JJ/value for money package for the first-time buyer of the album. Go, buy! |
