Editorial Reviews

Deluxe CD/DVD edition includes one bonus track over the standard CD pressing plus a bonus DVD. 2011 release, the 13th album from the British Pop vets. Starting out in the late Spring of 2009, at Sphere Studios in London, this much-anticipated Duran/Mark Ronson union flourished, as writing and recording began on an exciting new body of work, which Ronson has boldly stated is the imaginary follow up to Rio that never was. With this newfound partnership, the band was energized and excited by the music they were creating. The result is nothing short of pure Duran Duran brilliance. The album features guest vocals/Rap from longtime Duran Duran pal/collaborator Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters and R&B/neo-soul superstar Kelis, while Owen Pallett of Arcade Fire contributes the album's string arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars The return we've been waiting for. March 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Like all of you when I heard the original lineup had reunited for "Astronaut" I was thrilled.
Not quite so thrilled when I heard the disc.
Granted "Astronaut" had some great moments but that was not the comeback I was hoping for.
I skipped "Red Carpet" all together due to the reviews from fans and critics.
Then without even realizing DD was coming out with something new, this caught my attention on our local newspaper.
Not quite the hippest place to find out about a new DD album but that's it.

All I can say is THIS is the return I was hoping for.
I won't go into a track by track breakdown; people seem to get upset when I do that LOL.
All I can say is.....they better stay with this new producer.
This guy is really the new member of DD, injecting new life and vigor into the band I haven't heard in ages.
I'm sure you all know by now he told the band to make the sequel to "Rio"....and they did.
This is really the first and second album but it's so retro it sounds completely fresh and new.
Yayyyy.
It's 1981 all over again.
Let's just please leave the hair and the shoulder pads in the past if no one minds.

There really isn't one weak track on the album.
My favorites are.....honestly?
All of them.
Not a weak track here.

One more thing, I picked this up at Target and it wasn't even in the "new release" section.
What a tragedy.
I had to have some guy my age find it in the pop section as it was buried behind a bunch of other releases.
Inexcusable.
I guess DD just don't carry the same weight they used to.
Doubt it.
So if you can't find it in the new release section, ask someone. You'll be happy you did.

In closing,
I listen to this and I feel like a kid all over again.
Over the years my tastes have changed and it's been all about goth, metal and classical for a long time now.
Duran Duran have always held a special little place in my heavy metal heart.
Let's face it, 99% of pop is garbage.
Auto tuned, synthetic garbage with no soul and no skill.
Simon, Roger, Nick, and John still prove they're one of the few pop acts that ever mattered to begin with.
If you loved the debut and the timeless "Rio" do yourself a favor and pick up "All you need is now" for a much needed trip down memory road.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely five stars for me March 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I may be biased as I've been a life-long fan, but this is Duran Duran's best album for a long time. I got hooked to the band with The Reflex in 1984, followed them feverishly through the 80's but even for a fan like me, their late 90's albums were way too much off the mark. Coming back in their original line-up in 2003 was a true bliss for me, but even then, the Astronaut and Red Carpet Massacre albums only did it for me because I was so happy they were back.
This new album however, All You Need is Now, brings back the reason I loved them in the 80's. It even has some Arcadia influence in it, I think. Mark Ronson is a true fan of the band and his influence on the album is awesome. The current teenagers might not fancy it but this is a winning album for all of us who grew up in the 80's. And there are a lot of us! Go embrace your youth, put your worries and stress of daily life aside and go enjoy this music. And for people who've never seen them live: they are AMAZING. Their show doesn't involve dozens of dancers, twenty costume changes or flashy acrobatics, but they play music. And they do it well. They interact with the audience. And they have fun doing it! Go see them if they're playing near you in the coming months.

5.0 out of 5 stars The album I've been waiting 20+ years for March 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll admit it: back in the day I was a "Durannie." In the mid-80s I played Duran Duran's albums relentlessly. I was also an enormous fan of the side-project Arcadia, and especially loved the luminous sounds Nick Rhodes achieved with synthesizers and the occasional use of genuine orchestral strings. I grew disenchanted with the band's sound, which had changed a lot, in the '90s, but I still liked them. But I always wished they'd recapture that luminous sound of the first few albums and from time to time, in a song here and there, they did.

This entire album, from start to finish, is the sort of thing I've been hoping for since then. I've been excited since I caught the title track on YouTube weeks ago, and now that the CD's in my hands I'm amazed at how far the music has blown past my expectations. This is the album I've been wishing for since I was a teenager. Light-years more mature than the '80s songs, but with all of the beauty and vigor of that early music, it's virtually perfect for long-time fans and should resonate well with new listeners, too.

I haven't even decided which track is my favorite at this point; given that only three of the tracks got four-star ratings from me, and everything else got five stars, it's going to take me a while to figure out. And many, many more replays. I'm going to enjoy every second of that.

Top 10 "Greatest Hits" for 80's Synth Pop Artists?
I agree with your chioces but not order. Also I would change out 7.) Kraftwerk for Thompson Twins Great Hits (How could you forget them?). I think Kraftwerk is more minimal synth than it is "pop". Do you agree?

Anyone know anything about this release?
I got the album early and it RULES. Yes, "A Diamond In The Mind" and "Return To Now" are short violin versions of "All You Need Is Now". This brings the actual song total to 12. Also, they cowrote almost the entire album with Dom Brown although he's not... Read more

All You Need Is now
I can't stop playing it over & over & over. The band has pulled an amazing sleight of hand by delivering an album that truly sounds like it could've come out between their 1st & 2nd releases & sound as fresh & sharp as they can (and big credit must go to Mark Ronson too). With this, the upcoming... Read more
