Kindergarten-Grade 3-Written with clarity, though not with verve, this thorough and thoughtful book is a revision of a title originally published in 1988. It chronicles the struggle of the Jewish people to regain their religious freedom more than 2000 years ago during the reign of King Antiochus of Syria. Of particular interest is the presentation of the familiar "miracle" of Hanukkah as a legend, distinctly separate from the historical account of the Jews' rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. This edition is accompanied by a read-along recording of the Hanukkah story and a selection of holiday blessings and songs. Also new here are eight suggested discussion topics designed "to enable families to relate the holiday's historic events to today's world." Boldly colored cartoons appear throughout. The book tells the story clearly and concisely; the illustrations (new this year) are colorful and eye-catching, but what sets the book apart are the discussion themes for each of the eight nights -- suggestions for families to chat about while the candles are burning (what it means to be free, gifts and giving, what makes a hero, and more. There's also music and recipes to round out the holiday celebration.

I converted to Judasim 67 years ago and this book, that I got for my great grand children explains the celebration of Hanukkah better than I have ever heard or seen. Thank you for such a lovely, well written, beautifuly pictured book for all of us and our children and grands. I had it sent to me so I could read it and look at it before sending it on and I am so reluctant to send it to Jack and Mimsy - but of course I will. Thank you again.
