A Must Have!,
By Kyte (Cary/NC/USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: All at Once (Audio CD)
After hearing about a band by the name of Paulson for some two months I checked out a few songs and immediately ran to the record store to pick up "All At Once." Several months later and I still regularly play their second LP some three or more times a week. It's rare for a band this young (both individualy and as a cohesive band) to create such a masterpiece! The melodies, rhythm, singing, and instrumentation are fantasic. Moreso than their first album, "Variations" has a very haunting feel about it yet it's done in a very beautiful way. The way that the keyboards and guitars tie together is excellent, as is the drum and bass aspect, and the vocals are simply incredible.
Buy this record now before these guys start getting more attention! And make sure to catch them live!

Unique Rock,

One of the best releases of 2005. If you like bands like Dredg, Hum, Facing New York, then check this CD out. It flows very well, almost a dreamy feel to it, and the use of a keyboardist adds a lot the sound. There are no catchy choruses here, actually there aren't too many choruses period....but what there is a cohesive, layered sound that sinks in deeper with each listen. I would not call Paulson emo, although thats how I've seen them classified in some reviews. Unlike most emo, the singing on this cd is not the usual high pitched whining. Check it out, It won't disappoint.

DEAR PAULSON, SHAINA LOVES YOU <3!,

This album everyone should have! They have a dfferent sound than any other bands I listen to, which is awesome. Their sound is like progressive/indie/alternative/jazz. They're unique, and I love the drums and Logan's voice especially. Also how all the musical elements blend together. I've been waiting forever to say this and now I get to say it: this cd is awesome and if you can you should definitely see them live!!!! I saw them last night and I was blown away. Here's my ratings for the songs, and maybe they'll be helpful:
1) Voids: 10/10 Great opener 2) Under Crowns: 10/10 Great follower to the album opener 3) Calling On You: 11/10 Get the cd just for this song =] 4) Window Frames: 9/10 It's like a break from the first three songs, but still really good 5) Slow Down: 10/10 Starts off slow, and then picks up, awesome song 6) Programs: 8.5/10 One of the slower songs 7) Miami Current: 10/10 I love the beat to this song. 8) Not By A Long Shot: 9/10 One of the more mellow songs 9) Break Me In: 9/10 Starts slow and picks up, nice song 10) Ultra-High: 11/10 This is the song that got me hooked on this band, nuff said. 11) Just Shy: 9/10 Only because I'm partial towards upbeat songs 12) I Knew You When 10/10 I didn't like this song as much as the others until I saw Paulson performing it live- awesome hype song 13) What Are You?: 8/10 A mellow song to end the cd, I like the drums at the end. Just buy the cd, you will not be disappointed =D

Brilliantly composed, cleverly unique, great live show.,

I listen to it every day. It has drama, groove, urgency, sincerity, everything that makes good music. Even the new "happy tracks" that weren't on the first issue of this album are good, if not as... serious? The live show is fun and interesting... replete with wheeled shoes and a bandit bandana. It's nice to find... how to explain... danceable rock that could tour with folk bands or even hardcore bands. Very versatile, very much worth listening to instead of reading about. So I'll stop.
My only qualm is... where is the title track? All At Once is a great song!

Unfortunately, not enough people have heard of Paulson, the organic, introspective pop band who have released a record already. Hopefully the masses latch onto this wonderful effort, "All At Once," which is a beautiful blend of wonderfully dark melodies and harmonies and a myriad of splendidly layered instrumentation. Pianos, swooning, swirling guitars, and synthesizers find their own place on this disc.
"Window Frames," the soft ballad and key track on this disc, unveils a sense of melody unheard of from such a small artist. Driving, pulsating, and simply shimmering, this jam really unveils the sound you'd expect from a huge artist, not a small group like this. I was impressed instantly by this outstanding effort, and you should be too. Go see this band live, I know I'll be there the second they come out west, and do yourself a favor and pick up the first (and probably last) undiscovered hit record of this year. "All At Once" is the anthem of those cold winter nights, embodying a passionate, tranquil sea of emotions.

The new album is incredible. Paulson has definately come into thier own over the years and have continually written some of the most original and enjoyable songs. Paulson's musical conviction has come through thoroghly and created a mesmerizing soundscape that's subtly takes you above the norm. Having built profoundly textured songs, you will find yourself listening over and over. All At Once is one of the most unique works this year, with a deep yet upbeat sound, they are sure to please many. Also, if you ever get a chance to see them live, you must. They have one of the best stage shows ever.

The title says it all. The entire album has tracks that are deep and meaningful. This is indie-rock at its finest.
