Not what I expected,

I thought I'd add a review for this book as the one I read didn't give a lot of information just enthusiasm.
I would actually rate this book as a paranormal romance instead of erotica. And it is of book length rather than novella. We have our heroine Sara who has a "gift" of visions that she typically paints and who descends from the original line of "Hussies" who were protectors of warriors in times past. (You actually get provided with the origin of the word hussy that is quite interesting but I've not fact checked in the story.) We have our hero Morgan an amazing photographer who lost his father on his 12th birthday when he was trying to rescue a mother/daughter from a car wreck. Morgan has been tormented by his fathers words of the day that he had something to show him that would change his life. We also have a mystical "hussy trainer" Danu who the story starts with and pops up periodically. In the story these two meet, have amazing chemistry and they pair up to work the Democratic convention/presidential race as photographer and assistant. Their relationship progresses and we're headding towards our happy ever after when there is a dramatic turn (which I won't spoil for you) before we get the HEA. The book is an okay read. I think it needed a good edit as we have our major, drawn out, fantasies being fulfilled sex scene at the height of drama when they could be interrupted at any moment. This really should have been swapped with the middle sex scene. It didn't fit that we have our heroes stressed and worried for their lives but can take the time to not only get naked but draw it out endlessly. As a freebie download it was worth the time it took to read but I don't think that I'd buy any others of the Hussy series.

Identity crisis,

I downloaded this book hoping for a fun, sexy read. However, it soon became obvious that this book has an identity crisis. It does not have enough sexual activity or build-up to be considered erotica. Its paranormal aspects are not well-explained. You do not discover the main character's power or what she is supposed to do until you are almost at the end. The main characters don't meet until over half-way through the novel which means that it is not a romance.
This book left a bad taste in my mouth. With some editing ( and counseling) this book could have been decent. In its current form, save your time. It is not worth the kindle space.

I downloaded this book because I like fantasy, and I read good rewiews about it: a reader actually said that she read this book 30 times or more, so I thought it had to be interesting. I guess it would be an interesting "erotica" book, but for me it would need something else, a bit more structure in the plot, a bit more depht in characters: i.e, see Diana Gabaldon or George R.R. Martin. I'm sorry I really can't recommend this book, I couldn't ever finish it.

Stupid,
By Meghann (Arizona) - See all my reviews

Sara is a foundling who has the ability to go into a trance and draw things that will happen in the future. Morgan is a photographer who is apparently in his 40s but still hasn't gotten past the death of his father when he was 12. Sara is contacted by this semi-goddess figure, Danu, who tells her she is a "hussy," part of an ancient line of warrior women who partner with a heroic man to protect him and help him fulfill his destiny. When Sara and Morgan meet, she knows that he is the one.
Morgan is offered a job to be the main photographer of the Democratic convention. Weirdly, this job requires a year of work (I guess he's photographing the primaries also, even though that wasn't discussed in the job offer?) and a move to Washington D.C. (even though the primary season involves travel). The Democratic party is happy to hire Sara -- completely unexperienced in photography -- as his assistant for around $4,000 a month. Why not? While in Washington D.C., they have lots of out-of-scene sex (frustrating, for a book marketed as erotica) and then cross paths with an assassin. Is this Morgan's warrior task? It is not. I'm not going to spoil it, but Morgan's actual task is so stupid, so mundane, and so unheroic that if I had been reading this as a paper book instead of a Kindle, I would have thrown it at the wall. Not enough sex scenes, the sex scenes that exist are in really dumb places (I love sex, but if I had to choose between creating and executing a plan to save my LIFE or having sex, I would save my life first and then have celebratory sex), the paranormal set up is lukewarm, and the warrior task is the stupid cherry on top of the dumb sundae. Even though it is free, this is a great choice to skip over.

Even though it's a freebie, I would skip this one.
This author had an interesting idea, but the storytelling fell flat. If I could give the story separate stars from the book overall, the story would get 4, and the book itself would get 1. The idea behind this story was interesting--a line of women dedicated to protecting "warriors" (loosely defined) in their time, stretching into modern-day times with some fantasy, some time travel, and a hint of thriller. However, I found the story hard to follow because it was told so quickly, skating over the background, descriptions, character and plot development, and storytelling that would have invested the reader more into the characters and what happened to them. As a result, the plot came out quite unbelievable, the characters pretty flat, and the romance underdeveloped (but over-narrated.) I would keep an eye on this author, because there is definitely potential there, but not waste time with this particular work--I'll be hoping for a future one that has been more developed. (I, personally, would have liked to read about two paragraphs for each one currently in the story.)

Decent concept, poor execution,

I like the idea of bring back Danu to find the descendants of her fighting "Hussies" (although everytime they used the word, I giggled), to become modern warriors and save the world. I DIDN'T like how easily everyone accepted the paranormal aspects of the book, especially since they weren't well explained at all. I thought that for a book all about women warriors, the reason that Sara was supposed to protect the "Man destined to bring greatness to the world" had really not much to do with him at all, and certainly he was no more important to that outcome than she was. So why wasn't he protecting her? (sorry if that's vague, didn't want to jump right in with spoilers).
It was a mildly interesting story at first; but really, she had magical powers, and all she used them for was to stop time so they could have sex. C'mon.

Another boring entry,
This review is from: All in Time (Kindle Edition)
Not much to say. It was free, and almost worth the cost. I don't understand why anyone would write this and then give it away. What's the point? I only give it two stars because it was free. There is much better stuff out there.

This one got a lot of bad reviews. But for the erotica, the storyline is actually better than most. The author didn't seem to have real direction in which she wanted to take the story. But more than likely if you chose this book it was for the hot love scenes anyway. They will not disappoint. Happy reading!

Sara finds out that she is descended from a warrior race of women known as the Hussies, who were led by the goddess Danu. Each Hussy is supposed to watch over, and protect the life of a male human warrior. She is confused by the blackouts she keeps having. While she is in them, she creates art on her computer, or paints what she sees. Inevitably, these things will happen. When she meets Morgan, she feels like she has waited her whole life for him.
Morgan is haunted by voices; the first time he meets Sara, the voices quiet for the first time in too long. He has been dreaming erotic dreams about her for years. They are thrown together by the machinations of Sara's mentor. He accepts an assignment to photograph political candidates at the national convention, and makes Sara his assistant. Before long both are in danger. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that while they are being watched and stalked by the very same assassin who almost succeeded at the convention, they take the time to have an extended bout of love making. Hello, assassin out there, I'm going to be thinking of a way of escaping, not of snuggling up with my newest amour. This detour of rational thought comes after the two Secret Service agents who stopped by to collect evidence from Morgan and Sara are killed. I agree that this should have been more appropriately labeled paranormal romance. The Hussy premise was very original, but I do not think I will be purchasing any more in the series.

Quick and Fun,

I didn't dislike this book but didn't love it. It was okay. I read it quickly and was engrossed in the story for the time that I read it, but I'm not interested in any potential sequel that would come about and it didn't particularly impress me.
Even though the etymology of the word "Hussy" was explained (though I can't be sure whether that explanation is true or is just for the sake of the book's canon), I still giggled whenever Danu referred to Sara as a hussy. I just couldn't take any of it seriously whenever that word came up. I tried, but I still can't. It's just too much. If the author wanted their class of heroes to be taken seriously, she would have been better off to choose a different word to call them because it detracted from the alleged seriousness of their line. I didn't expect the twists that came along, though I did expect one of them. I mean, how much completely unprotected sex can anyone have without expecting a long-term outcome? So, obviously, that part was so far from surprising. I suspect that the author didn't intend it to be surprising, but if she did, it wasn't. I definitely, however, didn't expect the twist of her origin or how they were connected initially. Some of the book was very predictable and some wasn't. I knew how the climax would happen because that's generally the way that writers write the climax and think it's shocking or surprising to the readers. I'm a writer myself, as well as a voracious reader, so maybe that's why I was able to guess exactly what would happen. The villain was nameless and faceless. He served a purpose but nothing beyond that. There were a lot of loose ends. It's definitely a novel length book of the Paranormal Romance variety. There are plenty of sex scenes but not enough that I would label the entire thing "erotica/porn". This book, for an alleged erotica, has a good amount of plot and character development, which ranks it way above the average erotica but below most paranormal romance. Overall, because it's free, I would recommend that people give it a read. However, I wouldn't recommend paying more than a dollar or two if it ever came to it. It's good for a long afternoon of not leaving the home but having nothing else to occupy oneself, and it serves its purpose of a bit of entertainment. |
