The true story of Australia's entry into the Vietnam War,
By A Customer
This review is from: All the Way: Australia's Road to Vietnam (Paperback)
Pemberton's book was a ground-breaker when first released. Gone were the trite, old notions of Australia as a subservient state, entering into the Vietnam War at the behest of the hegemonic Americans. In its plce, Pemberton showed that Australia had its own vital (if somewhat misguided) interests in not only supporting the US, but actively campaigning for an escallation of the conflict. Additionally, the book is very good on the real source of Australian angst in the 1950's and early 1960's - Indonesia and the West New Guinea dispute. Overall, this book has achieved a 'classic' status among Australian foreign policy historians, marred only by the ridiculous and baseless deference toward the New Left in the introduction and conclusion. Avoid them, and you have a great book.
