part of the Sym Cycle,
By
This review is from: Allan Pettersson: Symphony No. 12 (Audio CD)
I once felt the 12th should be not considered as part of the symphonic cycle starting with sym 6 going through 15. I was wrong. This 12th without doubt belongs within the Grand Symphonic Cycle starting with 5, some believe with 6, as I do.
This CPO 12th is very good. However the real gut wrentching 12th is the one on Cappricio, very sadly OOP. I know you are thinking *can anything be more moving that this 12th on CPO* , Yes the Cappricio has a much greater intensity. Pettersson 's destiny is for the future. Like Van Gogh, both were decades, if not a century ahead of their times Even with the Inet its amazing how little known is this great master of music for the suffering modern soul. When word eventually gets out, you will recall my words. The generation that will come to adore Pettersson like no other composer, these are the ones being born today. Here is one composer that no american orch has the ability to perform correctly. And I hope the american orchestras do not perform the popular 7th. Not until every other sym is performed first. I know for a fact if any american orch attempts to perform the 7th the results will be fair, perhaps 3 to 4 stars. Its not in the blood, american orch are too politically correct, this music takes deep emotions. Proof: have you ever heard any american orch pull offa Shosty sym with colors? And do not mention Bernsteins 1959 shosty 5th. That thing has problems. . Pettersson takes eithera german, scottish or a select Swedish orch to render full justice to these sacred notes. The Stockholm can not successfully pull off a Pettersson sym. I've heard their Sibelius and its barely marginable. Paul Best New Orleans July 28, 2008
