From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9?This biography of the famous detective is filled with anecdotal accounts of cases involving counterfeiters, bank robbers, Civil War spies, western outlaws, and militant unionists. Although these gripping stories dominate the narrative, Pinkerton's private life and dynamic, if contradictory, personality are not neglected. The text is straightforward and chronological with dates attached to chapter headings, an approach that enables students to place Pinkerton's investigations in the context of his 19th-century milieu. Most of the black-and-white photographs and reproductions are large and clear enough to enhance the text. A source page documents the many quotations and reminiscences. The lengthy bibliography is divided between secondary sources and Pinkerton's own works. In the index, pages with illustrations are indicated in bold print. Though Richard Wormser's Allan Pinkerton (Walker, 1990) offers a much larger format, the text covers the same ground.?Pat Katka, formerly at San Diego Public Library

"A complicated man, Pinkerton helped capture lawbreakers, but he also broke the law by using his home as a station in the Underground Railroad. Josephson has unearthed much interesting information, presenting it with many well-chosen photographs." -- Booklist, October 15, 1996

"A fascinating biography of North America's greatest private eye! From secret codes, train robbers, war spies and disguises, this book is a page turner. Did Jesse James get the revenge he swore to on Allan Pinkerton? Read and find out." Umbrellas, Carolrhoda Books, Lerner Publications Co., 1998 -- Homeschooling News for Ontario, October 1996.
