I used the Allary Chalk Cartridge on a baby quilt I made for a friends first grandchild. The quilt took me over three months to make. It was so beautiful. Bright greans, pinks, blues, yellows, white, and lavenders. I stenciled, chalked and hand quilted a butterly in each piece. In the border around the quilt I stenceled, chalked and hand quilted a string of hearts. I'm saying all of this to stress the agony I have gone through. To get the chalk out I washed the quilt in cold water and Woolite. The chalk did not come out. I washed it three more times, using Shout Out, Oxyclean, and finally 409. Nothing worked. I now have a quilt that looks like a faded hand-me-down with orange chalk on it. If you do hand quilting, NEVER use this product.

Using on a chalkboard to make hand-lettering more precise. Works great. Have only tried white so far. Chalk sharpens well.

I'm a new hand quilter and I needed an easy way to mark seam allowances on a variety of colored fabrics. This set fit the bill since it has a wide selection of colors to use in addition to white. I'm not sure why the other reviewer experienced a lot of breakage because my set arrived in perfect condition.

I purchased 4 different products to use on a door I recently covered with chalkboard paint - traditional (no dust, non-toxic) chalk (GOOD), some colored fabric/sewing chalk pencils, a liquid type of chalk (Bistro), and this Allary Chalk Cartridge Set. I'm particularly happy with this product since it cleaned off perfectly with a wet cloth, allows definition, and has good color qualities. (Reported separately on the Bistro chalk, that it leaves a shadow and should not be used on chalkboard paint.) Have not yet attempted to use the sharpener, which I suspect may be problematic, and it is important to exercise some care when replacing the cartridges. In my first attempt to remove the chalk in the pen, it fell out quickly, and the chalk piece broke, so one should plan on removing/replacing on the horizontal, palm up.

This mechanical chalk pencil produces a nice thin line, which you have to maintain by carefully using the sharpener provided. The chalk can stain fabric, so do a test before using it on the right side of the fabric. Traditional tailor's chalk is good for some tasks, and this is good for others. It depends on the job.

After reading the previous reviews I was a bit afraid the chalk cartridges would end up broken and smashed, but everything arrived in perfect shape. Works exactly as expected. I only wish they sold refill packs in the different colors since white is what I use the least!

Ok, I am going to address the handful of issues the other users mentioned here. Regarding my knowledge of usage and materials behavior: I paint, I draw, I sketch, I sew, I bead, I do paper quilling and stained glass, have worked with wood much, and do/tinker with/or spend much time doing several other arts, crafts and playing music. For the past 40 years. So that goes to say I can tell the difference in quality of most arts and crafts products, and have acquired a large inventory of products over the years, in variety and purpose.
Regarding this one:
A: Only the WHITE sticks are actual CHALK. The colored sticks are the same material as coloring pencils lead, of the waxier type.
B: IF you are looking to mark fabrics with the colored sticks but want the markings to disappear, DO NOT use this product. As I stated in A, the colored sticks are waxy. The markings will not wash off. You're better off using the kids' sidewalk chalk, or the regular sized colored chalk from Crayola, or Rose Art, or whatever generic brand chalk. I have had no problems marking my fabrics with these, including my wedding dress.
C: Regarding the breakage. Keep only about a quarter of an inch (or about 7mm) of the chalk's tip exposed. This will maintain the pressure fulcrum supported inside the cartridge. Same concept as with mechanical pencils and with regular wood pencils: If the tip is too long, it will break when you put pressure on it with your hand and try to slide it across the surface. And some people (like me) use naturally more pressure than others to write.
D: The white chalk looks great, just like regular size chalk, on the blackboard, for smaller, detailed designs, writing, etc.
E: the pencil sharpener that comes with it works great! It sharpens the sticks to the perfect size.

The chalk was exactly what what described but it is thin and several
of the pieces were broken which in the long run will mean more waste.
I would recommend that this be purchased locally at a sewing store so you can get
everything home in one piece.
